Historical Description

Aldeby church was given to the see of Norwich, in the time of Henry the First. A priory of Black monks was founded here also. Aldeby contains about 90 houses, and 448 inhabitants.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

ALDEBY is a considerable village and parish in the vale of the Waveney and on the borders of Suffolk, with a station 1 ½ miles north from the village on the Beccles and Yarmouth section of the Great Eastern railway and 4 miles north-east from Beccles, in the Southern division of the county, Clavering hundred, Loddon and Clavering petty sessional division and union, Beccles county court district, rural deanery of Brooke (eastern division), archdeaconry of Norfolk and diocese of Norwich. The church of St. Mary is a structure of flint with stone dressings, in the Early English style, consisting of chancel with aisle, nave, north transept and an embattled central tower containing 4 bells: the west doorway is a fine specimen of Norman work and there is an early font in good preservation, a piscina and two sedilia: the old windows were renewed and the church reseated in 1880 at a cost of about £700, and it now affords 200 sittings. The register dates from the year 1581. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £290, including 2 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Norwich, and held since 1894 by the Rev. Frederick Clacy Hibburd M.A. of St. John’s College, Cambridge. The Ecclesiastical Commissioners are impropriators of the rectorial tithes, commuted for £735 yearly. The poor’s land of 24 acres is let on an average for £50 a year, which is distributed in coals. A small priory was founded here in the reign of Henry I. by Agnes, the wife of Robert de Rye, for monks of the Benedictine order and dedicated to St. Mary: the remains now form part of the Priory Farm premises. The trustees of Ampton School, Suffolk, who are lords of the manor, the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, who are lords of the Priory manor, Kings College, Cambridge, Mr. John Maplestone, Miss Dunbar, William Blyth, Mrs. M. A. Wright and the trustees of Allington Carman esq. are the chief landowners. The soil is loam and sand; subsoil, sand and clay and in some parts chalk. The chief crops are wheat, barley, beans, hay and roots. The area is 3,083 acres; rateable value, £3,152; the population in 1891 was 605.

This parish is a contributory to the Wheatacre United District School Board, sending 2 members.

National School (mixed), built in 1840, for 100 children; average attendance, 85.
