Historical Description

Attleborough, or Attleburgh; this is a market town and parish in the hundred of Shropham; it contains 216 houses, and 1,333 inhabitants. John Brame, a monk of Thetford, in his MS. history, as quoted by Mr. Gough, affirms that this town was the metropolis of Norfolk, and was built by King Atlinge, against Rond, king of Thetford, from whence, he says, it received his name; but our learned antiquary explodes this idea, and more properly derives its name from having been near some ancient burgh or fortification, "Atle-Burgh." This place was formerly the seat of the ancient family of the Mortimers; from this family it descended, by marriage, to that of Ratcliffe, of whom it was purchased by Sir Francis Bickley, hart, whose descendants sold it to the family of Ash.

The executors of Sir Robert Mortimer, knight, according to his will, built a chantry or college, dedicated to the exaltation of the cross, and endowed the same for a master, or warden, and lour secular priests, in the reign of Henry the Fourth. The revenues of it at the dissolution amounted only to 21l. 16s. 3d. per annum.

The church is in the collegiate style, with an ancient square tower, at the intersection of the transepts. The east end is destroyed, and the remains exhibit a large nave, with its aisles, a north and south transept, and a handsome porch on the north side. Many persons of distinction are buried in this church, belonging to the Mortimer and Ratcliffe families. A flat stone in the nave records the name of Captain John Gibbs, who died 1695; he was famous for his achievements on the turf. Mr. le Neve informs us, that Captain Gibbs laid a wager of 5001. that he would drive his chaise and four horses up and down the steepest place of the Devil’s ditch, on Newmarket heath, which he performed by making a very light chaise, with a jointed perch, and without any pole, to the surprise of all the spectators.

Attleburgh has a good market every fortnight, besides a small weekly one on Thursday.

Within two miles of this town, is Hargham House. By the road side, between Attleborough and Wymondham, a square stone pillar is erected in memory of Sir E. Rich, knight, who generously gave 200l. towards the repairs of the highways and formation of a turnpike road.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

ATTLEBOROUGH is a small market town and parish, on the road from Thetford to Wymondham, with a slation on the Thetford and Norwich section of the Great Eastern railway, head of a county court district, 93 miles by road and 106 ½ by rail from London, 15 south-west from Norwich, 5 ½ south-west from Wymondham and 14 north-east from Thetford, in the Mid division of the county, Guiltcross and Shropham petty sessional division, Wayland union, hundred of Shropham, rural deanery of Rockland, archdeaconry of Norfolk and diocese of Norwich. The water supply is derived from private wells, and gas is supplied by a private company. The church of St. Mary, a noble building of stone, in the Norman and Early English styles, was once cruciform, with a central tower and spire; the spire, however, fell, destroying the chancel, which has never been rebuilt; and the church now consists of clerestoried nave of five bays, aisles, two chapels, north porch and an embattled tower at the east end of the nave, with a parapet of red brick, and containing a clock and 6 bells: the interior was repaired and newly seated in 1844: there is one stained window; and in the church are several handsome monuments and tablets of the 15th cent, to the Radcliffe family, others of the 13th cent, to the Mortimers, to the Chanticlers of the 14th cent, and to the Dudley Ryder family, 1708: Sir William de Mortimer was the founder in the 13th cent, of the chapel on the south side of the tower, that on the north side being erected by Thomas Chaunticler in the following century: in the nave is a stone with an inscription to Capt. John Gibbs, a noted sportsman, d. October 22, 1695, aged 48: the western screen, now in a dilapidated condition, was formerly placed before the three arches opening from the nave into Mortimer’s and Chaunticler’s chapels: it is of large size and elaborate workmanship, and was removed to the west end of the church in 1845: there are 600 sittings. The register dates from the year 1552. The living is a rectory, average income from tithe rent-charge £1,115, with 17 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of Sir William Bowyer-Smijth bart. and held since 1866 by the Rev. William Chartres Safford M.A. and late scholar of Corpus Christi college, Cambridge, rural dean of North Rockland and surrogate. Here are Wesleyan, Primitive Methodist and Baptist chapels, and a Friends’ meetinghouse. The Wesleyan chapel, in the Station road, erected in 1872 at a cost of about £1,000, is of red brick with stone dressings, and will seat about 400 persons. A Cemetery of 7 ½ acres with a mortuary chapel was formed in 1885, at a cost of about £1,200, formerly under the control of a Burial Board of 9 members. The corn market with hall and reading room, erected by a limited liability company, at a cost of £1,000, and opened in August, 1863, is a structure of white brick, and there is a library of about 300 volumes in connection with the reading room. The market is on Thursday; and fairs are also occasionally held here. Messrs. William Gaymer and Son, who have been established at Banham for nearly two centuries, erected, in 1896, a large factory for the manufacture of cider, and the Banham works are now used as a branch only. There is a banking agency. The charities include Nerford’s, the rent of certain lands left, for educating six poor children, which formerly produced £30 per annum, but now only £5 yearly, which sum is appropriated partly to prizes, drill and exhibitions for poor children, and £2 12s. a year given to six poor widows in bread every Sunday; Sir F. Bickley's, the proceeds of six acres of land, and Andrew Reeder’s, the proceeds of 2a. 3r. 23p. both given to the poor of the parish; and the rent of the fuel allotment, comprising 57a. 2r. which is given in money; the rent of 11a. 3r. 14p. of land has also been left for beautifying the church, and the rent of 1a. 2r. 32p. for ringing the morning and evening bells. Hill House is the residence of Arthur Temple Cockell esq. The principal landowners are Sir William Bowyer-Smijth bart. of 24, Chesham place, London S W, who is lord of the manor, Sir Hugh Reeve Beevor bart. M.D. of 18, Serjeants’ Inn, London E C; Arthur Temple Cockell esq. Thomas William Daniel esq. of Thrigby Hall, and George Shepherd esq. The soil is clay; subsoil, clay and gravel.
