Historical Description
BARNEY (or Berney) is a parish and village three quarters of a mile from Thursford station on the Kings Lynn and Fakenham section of the Midland and Great Northern joint railway, and 6 miles north-east from Fakenham, in the Northern division of the county, North Greenhoe hundred and petty sessional division, Walsingham union and county court district, rural deanery of Walsingham, archdeaconry of Lynn and diocese of Norwich. The church of St. Mary is a building of flint, in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch, transept and an embattled western tower containing 1 bell: in the transept are monuments to Mary Reeve, d. 1830; Ann, wife of the Rev. John Lloyd, late vicar of Hindolveston, d. 1805; and to George Phillippo and Margaret, his wife, d. 1846: in 1890 the church was restored at a cost of £390, and now affords 120 sittings. The register dates from the year 1538. The living is a vicarage, commuted tithe rent-charge £103, average £80, net yearly value about £100, including 40 acres of glebe, with residence, rebuilt in 1848, in the gift of Lord Hastings, who is the lay impropriator, and held since 1881 by the Rev. Dashwood Pratt B.A. of Emmanuel College, Cambridge. Here is a Wesleyan chapel, erected in 1844. Bricks, tiles and pots are made in this neighbourhood; the quality of the material for this purpose found here is very superior. The rents of one cottage and one acre of land are applied in relief of the poor rates, and the rent of four acres, allotted at the enclosure in 1811, to the relief of the highway rates. Lord Hastings is lord of the manor, the tenure of which is by” smockhold;” he also is the principal landowner: the other landowners are Mr. John William Butler, of Barney Lodge, and Edward Bowyer Sparke esq. M.A., D.L., J.P. of Gunthorpe Hall. The soil is mixed, with a subsoil chiefly of brick-earth and clay. The crops are wheat, oats, barley and turnips. The area is 1,408 acros; rateable value, £1,401: the population in 1891 was 284.
A School Board of 5 members was formed October 30, 1874, for the United District of Barney & Fulmodeston-cum-Croxton; S. Aberdein, Hindolveston, clerk to the board & attendance officer.
The school is at Fulmodeston.
