Historical Description

BURGH-APTON (or Bergh-Apton) is a parish and widely scattered village, 5 miles south-by-west from Buckenham Ferry station on the Norwich and Lowestoft section of the Great Eastern railway, 7 ½ south-east from Norwich, and 3 ½ north-west from Loddon, in the Southern division of the the county, Clavering hundred, Loddon and Clavering petty sessional division and union, Norwich county court district, rural deanery of Brooke, Western division, archdeaconry of Norfolk and diocese of Norwich. The parish is bounded on the south by the river Chet. The church of SS. Peter and Paul is an ancient cruciform structure of flint and stone, in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, transepts, north porch, now serving as a vestry, south porch, and a lofty embattled western tower containing a clock and 6 bells: the clock was presented by Lady Amelia Pelham in 1838: the .chancel was re-seated in 1865 at the expense of the rector; the east window is stained, and there are some memorial windows including one placed in 1867 to Clara Thursby, others erected in 1885 and one erected in 1893 to the Rev. William Ford Thursby LL.B, rector, 1864—93; in the church are several monuments to the Cooke family from 1766 to 1843, and tablets to the Rev. Neville Walter, a former rector, who d. 1802, and to his wife d. 1812; besides other monuments to Robert Conoid, 47 years rector, d. 1715, and to Richard French, 45 years rector, d. 1764, and a brass to Violet Georgina, daughter of Graham Manners-Sutton esq. d. 1874: the church was restored and reseated in 1881, when a handsome oak pulpit and reading-desk were introduced at the expense of the rector and his friends; there are 360 sittings, 250 being free. The register dates from the year 1556. The living is a rectory, with that of Holverston annexed, average tithe rent-charge £440, joint net yearly value, £330, including 47 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the trustees of the late Rev. William Ford Thursby LL.B, and held since 1893 by the Rev. Thomas Fraser Lloyd. The ancient church of St. Martin, formerly existing here, was removed in 1834. Here is a reading room supplied with books and periodicals, and supported by the members. The poor’s land consists of 22 acres, let for £13 (less tithes), which sum is distributed annually in coals. Washingford Manor House, the residence of Humphrey Hubert Gilbert esq. is surrounded by a lawn, thickly studded with oak and other trees. Burgh-with-Apton Manor house, a handsome modern edifice of white brick, is the residence of Mrs. J. D. Denny. The parish contains two manors, Burgh-Apton and Washingford, of which R. H. Denny and S.H. Cooke esqrs. are joint lords. Viscount Canterbury, George John Holmes esq. of Brooke Hall, the Misses Anna and Georgiana Seago and James Christy esq. of Framingham, are the principal landowners. The soil is light mixed; subsoil, sand and gravel, with some clay. The chief crops are wheat, oats and barley. The area is 1,936 acres, rated at £2,120: the population in 1891 was 465.
