Historical Description

BINHAM (or Binham Abbey) is a parish and large village, 5 miles north-east from Walsingham and 5 south-east-by-east from Wells stations on the Great Eastern railway, in the Northern division of the county, North Greenhoe hundred and petty sessional division, Walsingham union and county court district, rural deanery of Walsingham, archdeaconry of Lynn, and diocese of Norwich. The church of St. Mary, formerly that of the priory, was originally a stately cruciform edifice with a massive tower; the choir, which was used only by the monks, was destroyed at the suppression of the priory in 1540; the nave, originally of nine bays, with triforium and clerestory, now consists of seven only, the two easternmost, which formed part of the monks’ choir, having been destroyed with it; the existing portion still, as in ancient times, serves as the parish church, and there is a small western bell-cot containing one bell: the Perpendicular font, an ancient and much mutilated work, is ornamented on the exterior with carved representations of the Seven Sacraments and the Trinity, figures of saints in niches occupying the lower panels: there are also remains of an ancient and richly-illuminated screen, with figures of saints: the lower part of the wall constituting the east end is the Norman wall of partition between the church of the monks and that of the parish: the south aisle disappeared at an early date, and some of its windows were transferred to the triforium openings and to the Norman arches: the north aisle was removed during the last century, and of the transepts and choir only fragments are now standing: the west front, a grand and wonderful example of Early English, was the work of Prior Richard de Parco (1226—44) and but for the detailed account given by Matthew Paris would certainly be regarded as of much later date: the church affords 300 sittings. The register dates from the year 1559. The living is a vicarage, with tithe commuted at £100 and 30 ½ acres of glebe, in the gift of William Capel Clarke-Thomhill esq. of Rushden, Northampton, and held since 1865 by the Rev. Robert Corry Cavell. A Primitive Methodist chapel was erected in 1868. Henry I. gave this place a charter for a market and a fair; the former is absolete but the latter is still held on the 26th of July. Part of the ancient market cross still remains. The annual rents of a public house and 27a. 3r. 23p. of land are devoted to apprenticing the children of the poor, the distribution of coals and coats, and also of money to poor widows: there are also two cottages for the occupation of deserving people, rent free. The Benedictine priory of the Blessed Virgin, of Binham, was founded by Peter de Valoines, a nephew of William the Conqueror, before 1093—7, and was dedicated as above in 1107, and at the same date made a cell of St. Alban’s Abbey: of the frater and chapter house slight remains still exist. In the second year of King John, the patronage was claimed by Robert Lord Fitzwalter, who besieged it in order to reinstate Thomas the prior, who had been deposed by the Prior of St. Albans, but the siege was successfully raised by forces sent by King John for its defence: on its dissolution in 31 Henry VIII. (1539—40) there were 7 monks, and revenues valued at £150, equivalent to about £3,000 in the present day; soon after it was granted to Thomas Paston esq. 5th son of Sir William Paston knight, and is now the property of William Capel Clarke-Thornhill esq. of Rushden, Northampton, lord of the manor and principal landowner; the tenure in the manor is by “smockhold,” that is, the wife possesses an equal claim in the copyhold with her husband and retains her claim in the event of his dying intestate. The soil is light; subsoil, marl. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area is 2,293 acres; rateable value, £2,277; the population in 1891 was 466.

National School (mixed), erected in 1878, for 70 children; average attendance 57.
