Historical Description

Blickling, a parish in the hundred of South Erpingham, near the river Bure, containing 50 houses, and 594 inhabitants. Blickling Hall is an interesting antique mansion. When Doomsday survey was made by order of the Conqueror, one part of this manor belonged to Beausoc, Bishop of Thetford, and the other moiety was possessed by the crown. The King settled the whole town and advowson on the see; and after this was fixed at Norwich, the bishops had a palace, with a park here. This manor was allowed the liberties of leet, namely assize of bread and ale, a gallows, tumbril, or cuckingstool, and free-warren. The hall afterward became the property of the family of Dagworth; from them it passed to the family of the Boleynes, and Henry the Eighth married the Lady Anne Boleyne, from this house. The present mansion was built by Sir John Hobart. His great grandson John, was created Baron Hobart, and Earl of Buckinghamshire. The house is seated in a bottom, and nearly environed with large old trees.

Blickling is now very expensively fitted up, and contains many large rooms; the entrance from the courtyard is over a bridge of two arches, which crosses a moat. In the house are fine statues and paintings. The park and garden comprehend near a thousand acres of land. About a mile from the house is a stone mausoleum, built in the form of a pyramid, in which are the remains of the late Lord Buckinghamshire and his lady. This hall is now the seat of Lord Suffield.

About a mile and a half farther on the road, is Wolterton Hall, a seat built by the Hon. Horatio Walpole about the year 1730; but is now that of the Earl of Orford. This is an elegant modern mansion, situated in a large park, well ornamented with wood and water, and near the house is the tower of a church embosomed with trees.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

BLICKLING is a parish and village 2 miles north-west from Aylsham station on the Great Eastern railway, and the same distance west from Aylsham Town station on the Midland and Great Northern joint railway, in the Northern division of the county, South Erpingham hundred and petty sessional division, Aylsham union and county court district, rural deanery of Ingworth and archdeaconry and diocese of Norwich. The church of St. Andrew, which stands on an eminence near the Hall, is an ancient building of stone in the Perpendicular style, and consists of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower: in the church are inscriptions to former lords of the manor, together with numerous brasses, the earliest being a bust of a civilian, c. 1360: there is a very large brass with marginal inscription to Sir Nicholas Lagworth, lord of the manor, 1401; and one to Roger Felthorp, 1454, and Cecilie his wife, with figures of 16 children standing before their parents: other brasses commemorate Cecilie, sister to Geoffrey Boleyn, lord of the manor, 1458; Anna, daughter of William Boleyn esq. 1479; Isabella (Boleyn), wife of William Cheyne, of the Isle of Sheppey, 1485; and Anne a Wode), 2nd wife of Thomas Asteley esq. of Melton Constable, 1512, with twins: there are brass inscriptions only to Agnes (Appleyerd), wife of Robert Phileppes, and to William Raynald, 1414; John Cok, 1503; John Catys, John Barker and Geoffrey Appleyard, and a monument to John William Robert, 7th Marquess of Lothian, who died at Blickling Hall, 14 Nov. 1841: in the chancel is a memorial window to Caroline Ann, Dowager Lady Suffield, d. 27 Oct. 1850: and in 1878 a monument, executed by G. F. Watts R.A. was erected by Constance, Marchioness of Lothian, to her husband, William Schomberg Robert, 8th Marquess, d. 4th July, 1870, to whom a memorial window was also erected by the parishioners: the church was restored in 1878, under the direction of the late G. E. Street esq. R.A. at the sole cost of the Marchioness of Lothian, when the porch and tower were erected: there are 180 sittings. The register dates from the year 1559. The living is a rectory, consolidated with Erpingham, tithe rent-charge £882, average £649, joint gross yearly value, £685, net £568, including 32 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Constance, Marchioness of Lothian, and held since 1868 by the Rev, Frederick Meyrick M.A. late fellow and tutor of Trinity College, Oxford, and canon and prebendary of Lincoln Cathedral. The manor was one of those belonging to King Harold II. and had great privileges; part of it was attached to the see of Norwich, whose bishops had a palace here: in the latter end of the 15th century this manor belonged to Sir William Boleyn, whose son. Sir Thomas Boleyn, was in 1526 advanced to the title of Viscount Rochford and in 1529 created Earl of Wiltshire, honours to which he had certain hereditary pretensions, but which were thus rapidly conferred by reason of Henry VIII.’s courtship of his daughter Anne Boleyn, afterwards queen: subsequently the estate was purchased by Sir Henry Hobart kt. and bart. Lord Chief Justice of the Court of Common Pleas (1613—25), whose son, in 1619, built the present stately mansion. Sir John Hobart, 3rd baronet, was knight of the shire for Norfolk in the last three Parliaments called by King Charles II. and had the honour of a visit from the king, together with his queen, at his seat, in 1671, when his majesty knighted Henry Hobart, the eldest son. In some ancient poetry the following distich is extant: —

“Blickling two Monarchs and two Queens have seen,

One King fetched thence, another brought, a Queen.”

Sir John Hobart, 5th baronet, was created Baron Hobart of Blickling, 28th May, 1728, and advanced to the Earldom of Buckinghamshire, 5th September, 1746: Harriet, or Henrietta, daughter of John, 2nd Earl of Buckinghamshire, married, in 1793, William, 6th Marquess of Lothian.

Blickling Hall, the seat of Constance, Marchioness of Lothian, is quadrangular in plan with two open courts in the centre and a square turret surmounted by a vane at each angle of the building: the clock tower over the entrance is modern: the entrance from the court in front, formed by the offices and stables, is by a bridge of two arches crossing a moat, and on each side of the bridge, upon a pedestal, is the figure of a bull, the Hobart crest, supporting a shield of the arms of the family: the general aspect of the Hall, with its turrets, curiously formed gables, bridge and moat, conveys an admirable idea of the domestic buildings of the Jacobean age: the library contains over 12,000 volumes, including some rare books and manuscripts; and in the house are numerous family portraits and various ancient and modern pictures of considerable value, including two of Gainsborough’s works, and statues in oak of Queen Anne Boleyn and Queen Elizabeth: some magnificent specimens of ancient tapestry adorn the walls of the various rooms, one of which, representing Peter the Great of Russia on horseback, was presented to John, 2nd Earl of Buckinghamshire, by the Empress Catherine of Russia, upon the occasion of his mission as ambassador to the Russian Court: the park and gardens, surrounding three sides of the Hall, comprise about 600 acres: the park is well stocked with deer, and is nearly divided by a wood of old forest trees, consisting of about 180 acres: the conduit and statues, which formerly adorned the platform of the gardens at Oxnead Hall, are preserved here: and there is also a pyramidal mausoleum with a base 45 feet square, in which are the remains of John, Earl of Buckinghamshire, and his two wives, Mary Anne (Drury) and Caroline (Conolly); in the park is a fine piece of water, in the form of a crescent, extending about a mile in length and 400 yards at its greatest breadth: the pleasure gardens, about a mile in circumference, have on three sides a terrace commanding a pleasing though confined landscape, in which the adjacent town of Aylsham forms a principal feature. In the park is kept a small herd of an old Lancashire breed of domesticated cattle, white with black ears. Constance, Marchioness of Lothian, is lady of the manor and sole landowner. The soil is sand and gravel; subsoil, gravel. The chief crops are wheat, roots, barley and hay. The area is 2,126 acres: rateable value, £2,059: the population in 1891 was 325.

National School (mixed), built, with teacher’s house, in 1868, at the cost of the late William, 8th Marquess of Lothian, for no children; average attendance, 70.
