Historical Description

BLOFIELD is a parish on the road from Norwich to Yarmouth, the head of a union, 1 ¼ miles from Brundall station on the Norwich and Yarmouth section of the Great Eastern railway, 7 miles east from Norwich and 119 ½ from London, in the Blofield and Walsham petty sessional division, Blofield hundred, Norwich county court district, rural deanery of Blofield and archdeaconry and diocese of Norwich. The church of St. Andrew is a fine building of flint, with stone dressings, in the Gothic style of the 15th century, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, north porch and a lofty embattled western tower, with four statues as pinnacles, and containing 6 bells: there are several monuments, including one of marble, with small kneeling figures, to a member of the Paston family, attached to the Court of Henry VIII.: the octagonal stone font, a work apparently of great antiquity, is adorned with sculptures, representing scenes in the Life of Our Saviour, but is much defaced: the church was restored in 1878, and has 400 sittings, 300 being free. The register dates from the year 1545. The living is a rectory, commuted tithe-rent charge £974, average £768, net yearly value £614, including 59 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Caius College, Cambridge, and held since 1880 by the Rev. James Percy Garrick M.A. late senior fellow and tutor of that college. Here is a Baptist chapel and a Mission Hall, and at the Heath is a Primitive Methodist chapel. The Rev. Mr. Reeve, a former rector of this parish, gave a house, situated near the church, and £10 a year, to be paid to a schoolmaster; he also gave three different benefactions, amounting to £6 7s. to be paid yearly in bread and clothing to pool widows belonging to this parish. These charities are now administered under a new scheme framed by the Charity Commissioners. The charities for distribution amount to £40 yearly, and there is also a fuel allotment of 37 acres let in portions of one acre each, under the recent “Allotment Extension Act,” at £1 10s. per acre. Blofield House is the residence of Edward Gilbert esq. J.P, Henry Randal Burroughes esq. who is lord of the manor, George Hustler Tuck esq. of Blofield Hall, Major Robert Herbert Heath Jary of Bitteswell Hall, Luttersworth, John Edward Cooke, and Thomas Slipper esqrs. And Mr. W. Edrich are the principal landowners. The soil is good mixed; subsoil, brick-earth, clay and sand. The chief crops are the usual cereals and roots. The area is 2,321 acres; rateable value, £5,232 5s.; the population in 1891 was 1,151.

Blofield Union

The union comprises the following places:-Acle, Beighton, Blofield, Brundall & Bradestone, Buckenham, Burlingham St. Andrew, Burlingham St. Edmund, Burlingham St. Peter, Cantley, Freethorpe, Halvergate, Hassingham, Hemblington, Limpenhoe, Lingwood, Moulton, Plumstead Great, Plumstead Little, Postwick, Ranworth-with-Panxworth, Reedham, Southwood, Strumpshaw, Thorpe St. Andrew, or Thorpe-next-Norwich, Tunstall, Upton-with-Fishley, Walsham South St. Mary, Walsham South St. Lawrence, Wickhampton, Witton & Woodbastwick. The population of the union in 1891 was 12,025; area, 45,965 acres; in 1896, rateable value, £84,738.
