Historical Description
Brancaster is a parish in the hundred of Smithdon, two miles from Burnham, and 115 from London. This place was the ancient Brannodunum of the Romans, where, when the Saxons first invaded Britain, was a garrison of Dalmatian horse: the Roman military commander was styled count of the Saxon shore.
Numerous urns, coins, and other Roman antiquities, have frequently been found here. The remains of an encampment, which answers the description given in Caesar’s Commentaries of those formed by the Romans, are still visible, and the area within the ramparts comprises about eight acres. Near this camp, a merchant of Burnham has erected a prodigious building, as a malthouse, which has now become equally a subject of curiosity with the Roman camp. Brancaster has the greatest malting-trade in England. The malt-house is a handsome building, and furnished with very convenient offices for conducting the malting process. The length is 312 feet, by 31 in breadth; and, during the season, 420 quarters of barley have been wetted weekly.
BRANCASTER is a parish and considerable village on the bay of its name and on a creek of the German Ocean, 5 miles west-north-west from Burnham Market station on the Lynn and Wells section of the Great Eastern railway, 7 east from Hunstanton and 22 north-east from Lynn, in the North Western division of the county, Smithdon hundred, Smithdon and Brothercross petty sessional division; Docking union, Fakenham county court district, rural deanery of Heacham, archdeaconry of Lynn and diocese of Norwich. The church of St. Mary is a building of flint in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave with clerestory, aisles, south porch and a fine embattled and ivy-clad western tower, with pinnacles, containing 1 bell: there are 400 sittings. The register dates from the year 1538. The living is a rectory, average tithe-rent charge £589, net yearly value £500, with residence and 7 acres of glebe, in the gift of and held since 1868 by the Rev. Charles George Robert Birch LL.M. of Trinity Hall, Cambridge. Here is a Primitive Methodist chapel, built in 1864, and there is another at Brancaster Staith, built in 1865. The Royal West Norfolk Golf Club was formed in 1892, under the patronage of H.R.H. Prince of Wales, and excellent links have been laid out on the common near Brancaster Beach: the club house, a building of Carr stone and red brick, stands near the links, and there are now (1896) 460 members. The Dormy house club, in the village, is a similar building and was erected in 1893 by Holcombe Ingleby esq. for the members of the golf club. There are almshouses here for four poor women, founded about 1593 by Robert Smith and his sister. Here was the Roman station Branodunum, garrisoned by the Dalmatian cavalry under a general designated Count of the Saxon shore: the castle and entrenchments occupied about six acres of ground above the marsh, where part of the ditch and a small fragment of wall are visible on the north side. A Roman road, called “the Jews’-way,” passed from Brancaster along the coast to the Roman station at Caister-next-Yarmouth. Many objects of antiquity have been found at different periods. Simms Reeve esq. of Brancaster Hall, who is lord of the manor, and the trustees of Mr. Philcox are the principal landowners. The soil is mixed, but generally light; subsoil, marl and gravel. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and roots. The area is 3,523 acres of land, 800 acres of salt marsh and common; rateable value, £3,680; the population, including Brancaster Staith, in 1891 was 782.
Schools: —
There is a Free school for boys, founded by Robert Smith & his sister, about the year 1593, & now under the management of trustees; the school will hold 70 boys; average attendance 50.
School (girls & infants), erected in 1860 & enlarged in 1894, for 100 children; average attendance 65.
