Historical Description

BROOKE is a parish and pleasant village, 6 miles south-by-east from Trowse station on the Norwich and Yarmouth section of the Great Eastern railway, 5 west from Loddon, 7 south from Norwich and 7 north from Bungay, in the Southern division of the county, Clavering hundred, Loddon and Clavering petty sessional division and union, Norwich county court district, rural deanery of Brooke western division, archdeaconry of Norfolk and diocese of Norwich. The church of St. Peter is an ancient building of flint with stone dressings, in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, north aisle, south porch and a round western tower containing 6 bells: it was thoroughly restored in 1849, and has 350 sittings. The earliest register dates from the year 1558. The living is a vicarage, average tithe rent-charge £175, net yearly value £120, including 4 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1895 by the Rev. Shirley Bunbury, Assoc. K.C.L. There is a Baptist chapel built in 1839. The town lands comprise 43a. 3r. in the parish, let for £49, and Pevers Farm, in Kirstead, of 53a. 2r. let for £75 yearly, which sums are applied in lieu of church rates and in the maintenance of schools. The fuel allotment is 5 acres, let for £15, which is distributed in coals amongst the poor, who have also some small allowance left by J. Kerrison, J. Fowls and W. Brereton. The custom of bolding a Harvest Festival or Thanksgiving, now universally adopted, was originated in this parish in 1853. Brooke Hall, the seat of George John Holmes esq. J.P. is a large mansion in the Italian style, standing near the site of the old hall, and was built in 1830 by its late owner; it is pleasantly situated in the midst of a beautiful park, thickly studded with oak and other trees, and containing a fine piece of water. Brooke House, a plain square mansion of brick, is the property of Viscount Canterbury, and stands in a large, well-wooded park. Brooke Lodge, an Elizabethan mansion, is the residence of Miss Knight. George John Holmes esq. is lord of the manor and impropriator of the great tithes, commuted at £390, and the principal landowner. This manor was given by William the Norman to the Abbey of Bury St. Edmunds, and the abbots obtained for it a market and fair, now obsolete. The soil is mixed; subsoil, gravel and clay. The chief crops are wheat, oats and barley. The area is 2,081 acres; rateable value £2,492; the population in 1891 was 629.

Parochial School (mixed), erected in 1838, & enlarged 1893, for 160 children; average attendance, 121; the school is supported from funds arising from the town lands charity, & is managad by trustees in accordance with a scheme approved by the Court of Chancery; John Holmes esq. J.P. one of the trustees, is acting clerk.
