Historical Description

CATFIELD, in the hundred of Happing, and 14 miles from Norwich, is remarkable for its rectory, being in the patronage alternately of the Bishop of Norwich, and of the Earl of Shrewsbury, who is a Roman Catholic peer. Catfield Hall is the property and residence of Geo. Cubitt, Esq. In the same hundred is Hickling, situated near the sea, and containing more than 100 houses. It was formerly a market town, and had a priory of Black Canons.

CATFIELD is a parish and village near the navigable Ant, with a station on the Midland and Great Northern joint railway, 14 miles north-east from Norwich, and 12 south-east from North Walsham, in the Eastern division of the county, Tunstead and Happing petty sessional division, Happing hundred, Smallburgh union. North Walsham county court district, rural deanery of Waxham, archdeaconry and diocese of Norwich; the parish, which includes parts of Hickling and Barton Broads, is large and the houses are much scattered. The church of All Saints is an ancient structure of flint and stone in the Decorated style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower containing 5 bells: a carved oak screen separates the chancel and nave; the seats were re-arranged in 1852, and the nave was new roofed in 1864: there are 395 sittings, of which 200 are free. The register dates from the year 1559. The living is a rectory, commutated value of the rent-charge £606, average £456, net yearly value £412, including 18 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Norwich and Mrs. Jickling, of Smallburgh Hall, alternately, and held since 1872 by the Rev. Arthur Brown B.A. of St. John’s College, Cambridge. Here is a small Primitive Methodist chapel, built in 1838. Catfield Hall, a modern house surrounded by trees, is the seat of Mrs. Lubbock, who is lady of the manor. The principal landowners are Mrs. Lubbock, Mr. William Barber, the trustees of William Salmon esq. and Miss Rudd. The heath land is let and the proceeds are applied for the benefit of the poor. The soil is good mixed; subsoil, sand, gravel and clay. The chief crops are wheat, oats, barley and turnips. The area is 2,225 acres of land and 236 of water; rateable value, £3,157; the population in 1891 was 590.
