The church of St. Agnes is a noble building of stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, north and south porches, a chapel for daily service and a massive western tower, containing 6 bells: a very handsome rood screen divides the nave and chancel, and in the latter is some stained glass: the nave has a good hammer beam roof, but in need of repair: plans for the contemplated restoration of which, as also the entire church, have been prepared by Mr. H. J. Green, architect, of Norwich; there are 400 sittings. The register dates from the year 1558. The living is a rectory, tithe rent-charge commuted at £1,015, average £756, net yearly value about £600, with 12 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of Pembroke College, Cambridge, and held since 1855 by the Rev. Near the Same inn, on the Norwich road, stands a small stone pillar, erected on the spot where Sir Henry Hobart bart. and M.P. for Norfolk, fell in a duel with swords, 21 Aug. 1698, with Mr. Oliver Le Neve, who fought with his left hand; Sir Henry, who was buried at Blickling, the family seat, was the father of Sir John Hobart bart. first Earl of Buckinghamshire. Three fairs are held-viz. on the 1st of February and last Wednesday in April and August, the latter of which is a large sheep fair. Cawston Manor was a member of the Duchy of Lancaster, but exempted from the jurisdiction of this Duchy by John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster, in token whereof a brazen gauntlet is carried before the lord of the manor, or his steward, when they hold a court here. George Cawston esq. who is lord of the manor, Brig.-Gen. William Earle Gascoyne Lytton Bulwer V.D. of Quebec House, East Dereham, and Heydon Hall, and Lord de Ramsey are the principal landowners. The soil is mixed; subsoil, gravel and clay. The chief crops are wheat, roots, barley and hay. The area is 4,361 acres; rateable value, £4,281; the population in 1891 was 1,068.
