Historical Description

COLTISHALL is a parish and small town on the high road between Norwich and North Walsham, and on the left bank of the river Bure, with a station on the branch of the East Norfolk Western Extension railway from Wroxham to Aylsham, 7 miles north from Norwich, in the Eastern division of the county, South Erpingham hundred and petty sessional division, Aylsham union and county court district, rural deanery of Ingworth and archdeaconry and diocese of Norwich. The church of St. John the Baptist is a building of flint, in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, south aisle, north porch, and an embattled western tower, nearly 70 feet high, containing a clock, presented in 1877, by R. A. Gorrell esq. and 6 bells: the west doorway and battlements of the tower are curiously enriched with rude figures: the church was restored in 1865 by subscription, at a cost of £900, the cost of repairing the chancel being defrayed by the Rev. Joseph Thackeray M.A. late rector (1846—80): a vestry was added in 1877, at the joint expense of R. A. Gorrell esq. and the rector: there are 400 sittings, 100 being free. The register dates from the year 1558. The living is a rectory, consolidated in 1880 with that of Great Hautbois, commuted tithe rent-charge £335, average £165, joint net yearly value £193, with 12 acres of glebe, in the gift of and held since 1858 by the Rev. John Colk Girling M.A. of Caius College, Cambridge, who resides at Great Hautbois. There are Wesleyan and Free Methodist chapels. The only charitable bequest is one by John Chapman, merchant, in 1718, of £10 yearly for the education of 10 poor boys, augmented by a further donation of about £10 16s. a year, left in 1815 by Dr. Charles Grape, formerly rector of Coltishall: these charities are now at the disposal of the School Board. There are several extensive malting houses, and a considerable trade is carried on in malt, corn, coals and other articles. Excellent fishing and yachting can be obtained in the neighbourhood. Henry III. in 1231 granted a charter to the town, conferring several privileges on the inhabitants. Coltishall Hall, the seat of Richard Rogers esq. M.A., J.P. is a handsome mansion, near the centre of the village, and commands a fine view of the surrounding country, including the river Bure. The Master and Fellows of Kings College, Cambridge, who are lords of the manor, G. W. Danby Palmer-Kerrison esq. of the Priory, Ranworth, and Mrs. Burroughes are the chief landowners. The soil is sand and gravel; subsoil, chalk. The chief crops are wheat, barley and turnips. The area is 1,190 acres; rateable value, £3,466 2s. 6d.; the population in 1891 was 893.

A School Board of 5 members was formed June 24, 1872, for the united district of Coltishall & Great Hautbois; H. H. Cole, London street, Norwich, clerk to the Board; J. W. Harmer, Coltishall, attendance officer.

Board (formerly National) School, erected by subscription in 1845, assisted by a parliamentary grant & enlarged in 1878, to hold 237 children; average attendance, 200.
