Civil & Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction
Historical Description
COLTON is a village and parish bounded on the south by the river Yare, 4 ½ miles north-east from Kimberley station and on the Dereham and Wymondham line of the Great Eastern railway, 6 ½ north-west from Wymondham and 8 west from Norwich, in the Mid division of the county. Forehoe hundred, petty sessional division and union, Norwich county court district, rural deanery of Hingham, Forehoe division, archdeaconry of Norfolk and diocese of Norwich. The church of St. Andrew is a small building of flint, in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, north porch and an embattled western tower containing 3 bells: the chancel and nave are divided by a screen, neatly carved, and the seats have handsomely carved poppy heads: inside the south door is a holy water stoup: the pulpit was presented in 1877 by C. Sugden esq. the brass lectern was given and the chancel reseated by the Rev. Henry Whitelock Turner M.A. late rector (1877—92): in the chancel are tablets to Rev. Henry Rix A.M. d. July 24, 1728; and to Emily Georgina, wife of Maxwell Julius Blacker A.M. and her four children, who were all buried in one grave at Brompton, Middlesex, June 24th and July 2nd, 1858: at the north end of the nave is a monument with arms to Philip Pooley gent. 1715; and there are tablets to Mrs. Elizabeth Browne (d. 1741); Henry Daveney (d. 1771) and Susannah his wife; Henry Daveney, Mayor of Thetford in 1639 and in 1647 (d. 1662) and Dorothy his wife, and to Jeremiah lives J.P., M.A, F.R.S, (d. 1829) and Anne his wife: the interior of the church was thoroughly repaired in 1852 and the windows filled with stained glass, and in 1855 the gallery was enlarged and a new organ erected at a cost of £250, defrayed by the late John Daveney esq.: in 1890 the tower was new-floored, panelled and converted into a vestry: there are 150 sittings. The register dates from the year 1543. The living is a rectory, average tithe rent-charge £232, net yearly value £202, including 50 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1892 by the Rev. Herbert Sydenham Clarke M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge: the rectory house was built in 1875, at a cost of £1,000. The late John Daveney esq. left £550 in £3 per Cents, the interest of which should be applied in aid of a salary to the organist. The fuel allotment of 10 acres produces £19 yearly, which is given to the poor in coals. This place is in the manor of Costessy, of which Lord Stafford is lord. Henry Blake esq. of Thorpe, Benjamin Edgington Fletcher esq. of Marlingford Hall, and the trustees of the late Major-General Daveney are the chief landowners. The soil is mixed; subsoil, chiefly clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley, hay, turnips and mangold. The area is 920 acres; rateable value, £1,116; in 1891 the population was 239.
School (mixed), built in 1855, at a cost of £250, for 50 children; average attendance, 39; & partly supported by £5 from the Rev. Henry Rix’s charity.
