Historical Description

Ditchingham, in the hundred of Loddon, is celebrated for a cold bath, the medicinal virtues of which are highly esteemed; in this parish is the seat of J. Bedingfield, Esq. Loddon is a market town and parish, in the hundred of the same name; it contains 166 houses. This town stands on the banks of a small stream, which falls into the Yare. The manor formerly belonged to the Bigods, Earls of Norfolk; in the time of Henry the Seventh it belonged to Sir James Hobart, ancestor of the present Earl of Buckinghamshire; Sir James was attorney-general. He rebuilt Loddon church, and St. Olave’s bridge over the Waveney this bridge cost almost as much as the church, which is a very sumptuous stone building, with a large tower steeple, within three or four miles of Beccles. In 1770, St. Olave’s bridge was rebuilt at the joint expense of the counties of Norfolk and Suffolk. The market on Friday is very inconsiderable.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

DITCHINGHAM is a parish and widely scattered village, with a station on the Waveney Valley branch of the Great Eastern railway, near Bungay, Suffolk, separated from it by the river Waveney, which is here crossed by an iron bridge: it is 13 miles south-east from Norwich, in the Southern division of the county, Loddon hundred, Loddon and Clavering petty sessional division and union, Bungay and Beccles county court district, rural deanery of Brooke, eastern division, archdeaconry of Norfolk and diocese of Norwich. The church of St. Mary, standing on a height, is a building of flint with stone dressings, in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, north aisle, south porch, and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing 6 bells: the stained east window is a memorial to Samuel Ives Sutton esq. and there is another to Colonel George Wilson: the aisle and vestry were added to the church in 1873, and the chancel was thoroughly restored in 1880: there are 350 sittings. The register dates from the year 1559. The living is a rectory, average tithe rent-charge £397, net yearly value £300, with 32 ½ acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of and held since 1881 by the Rev. John Charles Scudamore M.A. of St. John’s College, Oxford. All Hallows church, erected in 1865 as a chapel of ease, is a small building of flint with stone dressings in the Early English style, consisting of chancel and nave and a turret containing one bell: there are about 180 sittings. A cemetery of 1 ½ acres was formed in 1879, and has a closed lych-gate, which is used as a mortuary chapel; the cemetery is under the control of a Burial Board of nine members.

The House of Mercy, opened in 1859, in connection with the Church Penitentiary Association, is under the care of the sisterhood of All Hallows, and has for its object the reception of penitent women from all parts of England; the house is a large cruciform building available for 30 inmates, and includes a small chapel, forming the eastern arm of the cross. The sisters have also a “Community House” adjoining built of red brick, in a simple style, from designs by Mr. Augustus Frere F.R.I.B.A. architect, of London. In 1887 a new wing was erected as a memorial to the Rev. William Edward Scudamore, the first warden, who died in 1881; the new building, called “Holy Cross House,” is intended for an order of penitents who desire to consecrate the remainder of their lives to pious works, and will conveniently hold 12 inmates: in 1895 a chapel was built from Mr. Frere’s design in memory of Mother Lavinia, the late foundress.

All Hallows Home, founded in 1867, is an orphanage for girls of the better classes whose parents have fallen into reduced circumstances; they are admitted at any age above 3 and under 13, with the understanding that they remain in the Home until after confirmation; the house will hold 30 orphans; respectable girls of the lower classes are also received into a separate cottage, in the same grounds, for industrial training as domestic servants.

All Hallows Country Hospital is capable of holding 20 patients, who may be admitted without restriction from any practicable distance, at a small weekly payment: incurables, convalescents and lady patients are also received at an increased charge. A mission house was erected in 1888, and is also used for parochial meetings &c. All these institutions are under the care of the Sisters of the All Hallows Community, who also own the Grange farm.

The poor have certain allowances; and the rent of the town lands, which are let for about £100 yearly, is applied to the various public burdens of the parish. A charge of £2 a year on a piece of land is given to the poor in bread.

Ditchingham Hall, a stately mansion, standing in a beautiful park, thickly studded with fine oak and other trees, is the property and residence of William Carr esq. J.P. Ditchingham House, is the residence of Henry Rider Haggard esq. J.P. Holly Hill Lodge is the residence of Frederick J. McLaughlin. Tindall Hall, now converted into a farmhouse, belongs to Lord De Saumarez, of Shrubland Park, Suffolk. In this parish are the manors of Pirnhow and Ditchingham, of which the Duke of Norfolk K.G. and William Carr esq. J.P. are respectively lords. Lord de Saumarez, W. Carr esq. J.P. and Henry Rider Haggard esq. J.P. are the principal landowners. The soil is light loam; subsoil, gravel. The chief crops are wheat, barley and turnips. The area is 2,216 acres; rateable value, £4,189; the population in 1891 was 1,083, including 20 officers and inmates in All Hallows Hospital.

National School (mixed), erected in 1840 & enlarge 1 in 1872, for 150 children; average attendance, 130.
