Historical Description
Docking is in the same hundred: it is a vicarage in the patronage of Eton College. Admiral Lord Hawke was born in this parish.
DOCKING is a parish and union town, pleasantly situated on the old road from Lynn to Wells, on the highest point of Norfolk, with a station on the West Norfolk section of the Great Eastern railway from Lynn to Wells, 6 miles south-west from Burnham Market, 13 west from Wells, 12 north-west from Fakenham, 17 north-east from Lynn and 117 ¼ from London, in the North Western division of the county, Smithdon hundred, Smithdon and Brothercross petty sessional division, Little Walsingham county court district, rural deanery of Heacham, archdeaconry of Lynn and diocese of Norwich. This place was formerly called Dry Docking, from the great scarcity of water that prevailed here, but the deep wells now amply supply the inhabitants with excellent water of icy coldness. The church of St. Mary is a building of flint with stone dressings, in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, north aisle, organ chamber, south porch and an embattled western tower containing one bell: there are several monuments to the Hare family, and the stained west window is a memorial to Mrs. B. Hare, mother of the present vicar, who died in 1887: and another memorial window erected in 1892 to Mr. W. Crookham, 33 years organist and school master of Docking: the lectern, of carved oak, was presented in 1882 by the Misses Chadwick, of Tunbridge Wells, in memory of Mrs. H. E. Hare: the ancient font is adorned with many carved figures, much mutilated: the church was new roofed in 1875, and additions made, at a cost of over £4,000, and now affords 650 sittings. The register dates from the year 1558. The living is a discharged vicarage, average tithe rent-charge £434, net yearly value £408, with 45 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Provost and Fellows of Eton College, on the nomination of the Bishop of Norwich, and held since 1873 by the Rev. Hugh James Hare M.A. of Queen’s College, Oxford, hon. canon of Norwich and rural dean of Heacham. The great tithes are commuted at £1,114. The Wesleyan chapel is of red brick, and was erected in 1821; the Primitive Methodist chapel, also of brick faced with cement, was erected in 1836, and has 350 sittings. A Police Station, of white brick, was erected here in 1854, at a cost of £1,200, and contains a residence for a superintendent, and two well-ventilated cells; a sessions room was added in 1874 at the expense of the county. The Literary Institute, erected in 1869, is a building of flint with red brick dressings and is supplied with daily and weekly papers and periodicals. The principal hotels are the “Hare” and the “Plough,” situated near the railway station. The common was inclosed in 1861, 4 acres being reserved for recreation and 41 for allotments. The Town Well, in the centre of the parish and under the control of the parish council, was sunk in 1760, to the depth of about 237ft. at the sole expense of Mrs. Henley; a man is in attendance to draw the water, which is sold at a farthing a pail. The well in High street was sank in 1851, and on the 23rd April in the same year, one side of the well fell in and two men were killed. Sir William Hovell Browne ffolkes bart. of Hillington Hall, who is lord of the manor, John Hugh Montague Hare esq. M.A. of Eton College, Mrs. Seymour and Henry Calthrop Hollway-Calthrop esq. J.P. of Stanhoe Park, are the principal landowners. The soil is of a light sandy nature; subsoil, principally gravel or flint. The crops are wheat, barley, turnips, mangold-wurtzel and seeds.
