Historical Description

EAST RUSTON is a parish and scattered village near the sea coast, 3 miles north from Stalham station and 3 east from Honing station, both on the Midland and Great Northern joint railway, and 5 ½ miles east from North Walsham, in the Eastern division of the county, Tunstead and Happing petty sessional division, Happing hundred, Smallburgh union, North Walsham county court district, rural deanery of Waxham, Happing division, archdeaconry and diocese of Norwich. The church of St. Mary is a building of flint with stone dressings, in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, south aisle, south porch and an embattled western tower containing one bell: the panels of the chancel screen are embellished with paintings of St. Gregory, St. Ambrose, St. Augustine and St. Jerome: the font is enriched with carvings representing the symbols of the Evangelists, and was restored in 1884 by Mrs. Atthill, in memory of her husband: the chancel was restored in 1887 by the Ecclesiastical Commissioners at an outlay of nearly £400: there are 200 sittings. The register dates from the year 1558. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £296, with 12 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Dean and Canons of Windsor, and held since 1881 by the Rev. William Muskett Hobson, of St. Catharine’s College, Cambridge and surrogate, who resides at Ridlington. Richard Porson, the celebrated Greek scholar and professor of Greek at Cambridge University, was born here 25 Dec. 1759, his father being then parish clerk. East Ruston Hall is the residence of Ash Rudd esq. J.P. Messrs. Keith, Blake & Co. of Norwich, are lords of the manor. The principal landowners are Ash Rudd esq. Charles Le Neve, Henry Morse Taylor esq. of the Rookery, Dilham, and George Waterson esq. of 75, Perham road, West Kensington, London W. The soil is fine rich loam; subsoil, sand, gravel and clay. The number of acres is 2,446, mostly in tillage, with the exception of 300 acres of common land, on which the poor pasture their cattle and cut fuel; rateable value, £3,719; the population in 1891 was 645.

A School Board of 5 members was formed 12 November, 1875, for the united district of East Ruston & Ridlington; T. W. Durrell, Dilham, clerk to the board; William Cooke, Stalham, attendance officer.

Board School (mixed), erected in 1879, for 150 children, average attendance, 116.
