Historical Description

EMNETH is a straggling village and parish on the navigable Nene, 1 mile south from the Emneth Road station on the Wisbech and Lynn section of the Great Eastern railway, 3 miles east-south-east from Wisbech and 98 ¾ miles from London, in the North-Western division of the county, Freebridge Marshland hundred and petty sessional division, Wisbech union and county court district, rural deanery of Wisbech and under the peculiar archidiaconal jurisdiction of the Bishop of Ely. The church of St. Edmund is an ancient building of stone in the Early English and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, clerestoried nave, aisles, south porch and a large embattled western tower containing 5 bells: the interior was restored in 1866, and has 400 sittings, 220 of which are free. The register dates from the year 1586. The living is a vicarage, average tithe rent-charge £289, net yearly value £210, including 1 ¼ acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Ely, and held since 1868 by the Rev. Edward Henry Lovelock M.A. of St. John’s College, Cambridge. There are Wesleyan, Primitive Methodist and Wesleyan Reform chapels here, all erected in 1854. Inglethorpe Manor is the seat of Francis Maltby Bland esq. J.P. Arthur Metcalfe esq. is lord of the manors of Hogbeach and Inglethorpe. The principal landowners are Edwd. Wm. Traffor d esq. of Brundall House, Alexander Peckover esq. of Bank House, Wisbech, and Thomas Dearlove Dearlove esq. of Oxburgh Hall. The soil is loam; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat and market garden produce; there is also much pasturage ground. The area is 3,591 acres; rateable value, £6,787; the population in 1891 was 922.

The boys of this parish are entitled to attend the Endowed school at Elm, in Cambridge.

National School, erected in 1860, for 120 children; average attendance, 90.
