Historical Description

FELTWELL is a parish and large village 3 miles north from Lakenheath station on the Ely and Thetford section of the Great Eastern railway and 6 north-west from Brandon, in the South Western division of the county, Grimshoe hundred and petty sessional division, Thetford union and county court district, rural deanery of Cranwich, south division, archdeaconry of Lynn and diocese of Norwich. The parishes of St. Mary and St. Nicholas are now united. The church of St. Mary is an edifice in the Decorated style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles and an embattled western tower with pinnacles and various sculptured figures and highly wrought ornament, and containing 3 bells: the nave is divided from the chancel by a carved oak screen: the chancel retains a piscina and two mural brasses to Margaret Moundeford and Francis Hethe, of Mildenhall; and there are others with effigies, to Francis Moundeford and his two wives and to Osbert Moundeford, all of the 16th century, besides other brasses to the Newcome family: the east window and others are stained: the church was considerably enlarged and the northern arcade rebuilt for the use of the inhabitants of the two parishes, about 1864, at the sole expense of the late Rev. Edward Bowyer Sparke M.A. rector from 1831: there are 680 sittings, 300 being free.

The church of St. Nicholas, standing on rising ground, in the western part of the village, is a much smaller and plainer but ancient structure, the upper part of which has been rebuilt with flint, and consists of nave, south aisle, south porch and a small round western tower containing 5 bells: it is now used as a mortuary chapel only. The earliest register is dated, on the cover, A.D. 1559, but the first entry is in the year 1562; the first two leaves have evidently been removed many years. The living is a rectory, average tithe rent-charge £979, gross yearly value £1,063, including 211 acres of glebe, with residence, in the alternate gift of the Lord Chancellor and the Bishop of Norwich, and held since 1879 by the Rev. Henry Thomas O'Rorke M.A. of Trinity College, Dublin. There are Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist chapels. The Moundeford charity of £486 yearly, subject to deductions for drainage rates, is derived from 612 acres of land; £225 is applied to the school, £180 to the support of almshouses, and £50 is distributed in clothing. There are eight almshouses, endowed in 1642, by Sir Edward Moundeford kt. and re-erected by the parish in 1819, besides many minor charities bequeathed by the families of Clough, Rawlins and Atmore, which are distributed among the poor. The Poor’s Common consists of 360 acres of fen, on which all such inhabitants of the township as are legally settled therein and occupy lands or tenements of not more than £10 a yeay may cut fuel under the direction of the lords of the manor, rector, churchwardens and overseers, who were appointed trustees for the management of the common by the Inclosure Act, dated 1813. At the Eastern approach to the village, in the centre of the roadway, is an ancient oak tree of immense size, standing on a grassy mound or plot eight or ten feet in diameter; an iron railing has been placed to preserve the tree. A fair is held on November 20th. Feltwell Lodge is a large mansion of brick, in park-like grounds, occupied by Col. Edward George Hibbert. Feltwell Hall, the seat of Lieut.-Col Francis D’Arcy William Clough Newcome B.A., D.L., J.P. is also of brick. East Hall, the seat of Mrs. Edward Sparke, is a fine mansion of brick, in the Elizabethan style. The Rev. William Cyril Newcome M.A. rector of Boothby-Pagnell, Lines, is lord of the chief or capital manor; Lieut.-Col. F. D. W. C. Newcome is lord of the manor of South Hall; the representatives of the late Rev. Edward Bowyer Sparke are lords of the manor of Wendlings, Spinvills and Duntons; and the Masters and fellows of Christ’s College, Cambridge, are lords of the manor of East Hall; the above are also the principal landowners. The soil is mixed; subsoil, chalk and sand. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and turnips. The area is 13,181 acres, one-half of which is fen; rateable value, including Feltwell Fen Farms £7,555; the population in 1891 was 1,557.

A School Board of 5 members was formed August 2,1887, for the united district of Feltwell Anchor & Feltwell St. Mary & St. Nicholas; E. N. Cole, Croxton, clerk to the board.

Free School (mixed), built, with master’s residence, in 1819, by the Moundeford Charity Trustees, & a mistress’s residence since added; the school will hold 200 children; average attendance, 123; infants’, for 100; average attendance, 71.
