Historical Description

FILBY is a parish 2 miles south-west from Ormesby station on the Midland and Great Northern joint railway, about 6 miles north-west from Yarmouth and 17 north-east from Norwich, in the Eastern division of the county, incorporated hundreds, petty sessional division and incorporation of East and West Flegg, county court district of Great Yarmouth, rural deanery of Flegg and archdeaconry and diocese of Norwich. The name, like many of those in the Flegg district ending in “by,” is of Scandinavian origin. The church of All Saints, situated on a height overlooking the lake, is a building of stone in mixed styles, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, north porch and a lofty embattled tower of fine proportions containing 5 bells, rehung in 1886: there are seven stained windows, one of which, erected in 1883, together with the lectern, form a memorial to Mrs. Lucas, wife of the Rev. Charles Lucas M.A. rector 1848—49, to whose memory a stained window was also erected in 1890; there are various monuments to the Lucas family, one of which, executed by Herrman, of Dresden, to Charles Lucas esq. who died in 1831, is a fine piece of sculpture; there are others to Gibson Lucas esq. d. 15 Aug. 1790, and to Mary Ann Lucas, his wife, d. 12 Dec. 1774: the fine panelled oak screen is in part ancient, but the upper portion was added by the late rector in 1886: the church was restored in 1873 and affords 300 sittings. The register dates from the year 1599. The living is a rectory, tithe rent-charge £597, average £454, net yearly value £310, with 17 ½ acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Charles B. Lucas esq. and held since 1889 by the Rev. Herbert Hamilton Lucas M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge. There is a Primitive Methodist chapel, erected in 1886, and a Unitarian chapel, built and endowed by Henry Daliel, in the beginning of the 18th century, as a Presbyterian chapel. The fuel allotment of 10 acres produces £27 yearly. The parish is famous for its excellent raspberries, many hundred pounds’ worth of which are sent to London and other towns during the season. Filby was given by William the Conqueror to Rabell, the engineer officer who had charge of the balistae and other military engines; the manor was afterwards held by a family of its own name. Filby House, a mansion of white brick, is the seat of Charles Belgrave Lucas esq. J.P. lord of the manor and chief landowner. The soil is mixed; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area is 1,323 acres, of which about 100 are plantations and 107 are occupied by a lake, forming a portion of the system of broads in the neighbourhood; rateable value, £2,895; the population in 1891 was 581.

A School Board of 5 members was formed February 25, 1875, with Mautby contributory with 2 members; Rev. H, H, Lucas M.A. clerk to the board; William English, Filby, attendance officer.

Board School, built in 1838, at a cost of £500 & enlarged about 1877 & infants’ room added in 1882; it will hold 127 children; average attendance, 90.
