Historical Description

FINCHAM is a parish and village on the road from Downham to Swaffham, 5 miles north-east from Downham station, Ely and Lynn section of the Great Eastern railway, in the South Western division of the county, Clackclose hundred and petty sessional division, Downham union and county court district, rural deanery of Fincham, archdeaconry of Lynn and diocese of Norwich. The ancient church of St. Michael, formerly existing here, was taken down in 1745. The church of St. Martin is a large building of flint and stone, in the Perpendicular style, with traces of an earlier structure, and consists of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and a lofty embattled western tower, containing a clock and 6 bells; the ancient Norman font has a basin 2 feet 7 inches square, and is ornamented with sculptures representing “The Fall of Man,” “The Offerings of the Magi,” “The Birth and Baptism of Our Saviour,” and figures of John the Baptist, and a bishop, but some of these are much defaced: the chancel, restored in 1870 by the late Miss Hebgin, has a hagioscope and a memorial window, erected in 1886 by the parishioners, to the late Rev. William Blyth M.A. for 40 years rector of this parish: there are several ancient floor stones to the Finchams, but the figures on these are almost obliterated. Sir Nicholas Fincham, who built the vestry, was interred here in 1503; the church was restored and extensively repaired during the incumbency of the Rev. William Blyth M.A. (1846—86), when several stained windows were erected: there are 400 sittings: the churchyard was enlarged in 1864, by a gift of land from Mr. Hebgin, part impropriator of the tithes. The register dates from the year 1541. The living is a rectory, tithe rent-charge commuted at £674, net yearly value £528, with 30 acres of glebe and residence, in the alternate gift, of the Lord Chancellor and the representatives of the Rev. William Blyth M.A. late rector, and held since 1886 by the Rev. Charles Hy. Crosse M.A., L.L.M. of Caius College, Cambridge. The rectory house was built in 1624. There are Wesleyan Methodist and Primitive Methodist chapels here. About 54 acres of land, allotted to the poor, produce an average income of £50 per annum, which is distributed yearly in coals; the poor widows have also a yearly rent-charge of 9s. 4d. left, it is supposed, by the Rev. Thomas Bodham, and the interest of £23 given by unknown donors. Fincham Hall, built about the time of Edward IV. was formerly the seat of the Finchams, and though frequently repaired and modernized, some portions still retain their ancient character: it is at present in the occupation of George W. Aylmer esq. The village is nearly equally bisected by a deep channel called “the Lode Dyke,” which is the straightened course of a natural stream flowing from Stradsett through Fincham and Barton Bendish, and thence into the river Wissey at Stoke Ferry. The people of Fincham were largely involved in Ket’s rebellion, in 1549, and did much to give importance to the movement. Thomas Leigh Hare esq. M.P., D.L., J.P. of Stow Hall, is lord of the manor of Fincham Hall and other manors in this parish, and the trustees of Mr. Calthrop are lords of Fairswell-in-Fincham. The principal landowners are Thomas Leigh Hare esq. M. P. the trustees of the late Miss Hebgin, the trustees of the late John Brigham Barsham esq. and the trustees of the late T. Cossar M.D. of Corstorphine, N.B. The soil is chalk and rich alluvial; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat and barley. The area is 2,973 acres; rateable value, £3,601; the population in 1891 was 695.

National Elementary School (Church) (mixed), erected in 1848 & enlarged in 1875, for 156 children; average attendance, 104: the school has an endowment of £4 17s. yearly.
