Historical Description
GISSING is a parish and village, 2 miles north from the Burston and 2 south from Tivetshall stations, both on the Ipswich and Norwich section of the Great Eastern railway, and 5 north-east from Diss, in the Southern division of the county, Depwade union, Diss hundred, petty sessional division and county court district, rural deanery of Redenhall, archdeaconry of Norfolk and diocese of Norwich. The church of St. Mary is an ancient building of flint, in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, north and south chancels, nave, north porch and a round western tower containing 5 bells: there is a fine Norman doorway and the roof is of carved oak: in the chancel and north chapel are five very handsome marble monuments, with arms, of the Kemp family, one of the date of 1612 and one to Sir Robert Kemp kt, created a baronet by Charles I. 14 Mar. 1641, and died 20 Aug. 1647; and a memorial to the Rev. Edward Howman, formerly rector of the parish, and to Ann his wife: the interior was thoroughly restored in 1876—7, at a cost of about £1,500, and affords 120 sittings. The registers were destroyed by fire at the rectory some years ago, but some fragments, dating from the 16th century, have since been discovered. The living is a rectory, average tithe rent-charge £377, net yearly value £387, including 87 acres of glebe, with residence, built in 1878, in the gift of Sir Kenneth Hagar Kemp bart. and held since 1896 by the Rev. William Ernest Simons Cooper M.A. of Keble College, Oxford. There is a Wesleyan chapel. A sum of £4, derived from a freehold cottage and garden left to the poor of the parish by Edward Smith and Thomas Ringer, is divided amongst them annually. Gissing Hall, the property of Sir Kenneth Hagar Kemp bart. of Mergate Hall, Norwich, is a modern mansion, in the Elizabethan style, situated in a well-wooded park, and now occupied by Cecil Thomas Molyneux-Montgomerie esq. D.L., J.P. Sir Kenneth Hagar Kemp bart. who is lord of the manors of Gissing, Kemp-with-Dallings and Gissing-cum-Dagworth is the principal landowner; the manor and greater part of the parish having been held by the Kemp family since 1324; the governors of Norwich Free Grammar School and the trustees of Doughty’s Hospital, Norwich, are likewise landowners. The soil is heavy; subsoil, clay and brick earth. The chief crops are wheat, barley, peas and beans. The area is 2,005 acres; rateable value, £2,609 5s.; and the population in 1891 was 434.
