Historical Description

GREAT ELLINGHAM is a village and parish about 3 miles north-west from Attleborough station on the Norwich and Thetford section of the Great Eastern railway, in the Mid division of the county, Guiltcross and Shropham petty sessional division, Shropham hundred, Wayland union, Attleborough county court district, rural deanery of Rockland, archdeaconry of Norfolk and diocese of Norwich. The church of St. James is a spacious building of flint, with stone dressings, in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave of four bays, aisles, north porch and an embattled western tower with spire, containing 5 bells; there are 500 sittings. The register dates from the year 1653. The living is a vicarage, annexed to the rectory of Little Ellingham, average tithe rent-charge £563, joint net yearly value £450, including 39 acres of glebe, in the gift of Richard Berridge esq. and held since 1895 by the Rev. Robert Bourne B.A. of the University of London, who resides at Little Ellingham. The Baptist chapel, founded here in 1699 and rebuilt in 1824, is of red brick with stone dressings, and will seat about 300 persons. There is also a Primitive Methodist chapel. The poor have the benefit of a fuel allotment of 52 acres producing £57 17s. 6d. yearly. A Foresters’ lodge, having about 100 members, holds its meetings here. Lord Walsingham is lord of the Bury Hall manor, and Alfred Taylor esq. of the other two manors. The principal landowners are Lord Walsingham, George Tyrrell Tyrrell esq. of Thetford, Sir William Bowyer-Smijth bart. of 24 Chesham place, S.W. Henry Norton esq. of Norwich and Oldham Carter esq. of Wereham. The soil is various; subsoil, various. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area is 2,756 acres; rateable value, £3,418; the population in 1891 was 603.

A School Board of 5 members was formed June 3, 1873; Frederick Robinson, Watton S.O. clerk to the board.

Board (mixed), formerly British, erected in 1855, for 80 children; average attendance, 71.

Board (mixed), built in 1865 at a cost of £318, for 60 children; average attendance, 59.

New Schools, to supersede those existing, are now (1896) being erected from the plans & under the direction of Mr, H. J. Green, architect, of Norwich, at an estimated cost of £2,500, & are to hold 200 children.
