Historical Description

HEACHAM is a parish and large village, pleasantly situated on the German Ocean and on a small rivulet, with a junction station of the West Norfolk and Lynn and Hunstanton sections of the Great Eastern railway, 12 miles west from Burnham Market, 13 north-north-east from Lynn, 2 from the pleasant watering place of New Hunstanton and 112 from London, in the North Western division of the county, Smithdon hundred, Smithdon and Brothercross petty sessional division, Docking union, Lynn county court district, Heacham rural deanery, archdeaconry of Lynn, and diocese of Norwich. The village appears in the distance as if embosomed in wood, above which peeps the church tower: it has fine firm sands, which render sea bathing both safe and agreeable, and the small stream on which it stands abounds in trout. Colliers’ and other small craft can unload here. The church of St. Mary is a noble edifice of stone and flint in the Gothic style of the 15th century, and exhibits traces of having undergone repeated alterations: it consists of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch, vestry and a central embattled tower containing 2 bells: in the church are monuments to Charles Edward Neville-Rolfe M.A. d. 1863; to Charles Fawcett Neville-Rolfe, d. 1869, and to Nicholas Styleman esq. d. 30 April, 1833: the windows contain some ancient stained glass and there are 300 sittings, 80 being free. The register dates from the year 1558. The living is a vicarage, average tithe rent-charge £202, net yearly value £180, with 7 ½ acres of glebe, in the gift of Eustace Neville-Rolfe esq. and held since 1873 by the Rev. George Thomas Thompson B.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge. There is a Wesleyan chapel built in 1831 and restored 1891, and a Primitive Methodist chapel, erected in 1862. A small Isolation hospital of carr stone was erected in 1895 at Redgate hill in this parish, and half-a-mile from New Hunstanton. The poor’s land of 6 acres is let for £14 yearly, which sum is distributed in coals, as also is a charity of 20s. yearly; Rolfe’s, producing £16, is for clothing. A fair is held on the 20th and 21st June in each year. Here was anciently a Cluniac priory, a cell of Lewes Abbey and dedicated to St. Mary. In 1850, coins of the reigns of Henry I. II. and III. were dug up in the churchyard. In the vicinity are several excellent quarries of carr stone, which is used for building purposes; this stone when first quarried is soft, but hardens on exposure to the air. Heacham Hall, a picturesque mansion of red brick, pleasantly situated, is the property of Eustace Neville-Rolfe esq. and now occupied by Holcombe Ingleby esq. Hamon le Strange esq. of Hunstanton Hall, who is lord of the manor, Eustace Neville-Rolfe esq. and Caius College Cambridge, are the principal landowners. The soil is various; the subsoil is chiefly chalk. The chief crops are wheat, barley, turnips and mangold wurzel; and beans on the part next the sea. The area is 3,584 acres of land and 1,034 of foreshore; rateable value, £6,180; the population in 1891 was 989. In 1851, 225 acres of common were inclosed from the sea.
