Historical Description

HELLESDON (or Hellesden) is a parish and village, with a station on the Midland and Great Northern joint railway, and is about 2 miles north-west from Norwich and 115 ½ from London, in the Eastern division of the county, Taverham hundred and petty sessional division, St. Faith’s union, Norwich county court district, partly within the county of the city of Norwich, and in the rural deanery of Taverham and archdeaconry and diocese of Norwich. The church of St. Mary is a small building of flint and stone, in the Perpendicular style, consisting of nave, north aisle, south porch and a wooden belfry with spire containing one bell: the church was reseated throughout in oak, and generally improved in 1869, and has 150 sittings, The register dates from the year 1513. The living is a rectory, consolidated with that of Drayton, average yearly value from tithe rent-charge £533, net income £580, with 51 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Bishop of Norwich, and held since 1855 by the Rev. Hinds Howell M.A. of Merton College, Oxford, honorary canon of Norwich and rural dean of Taverham, who resides at Drayton; the Rev. George Edward Badeley B.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge, has been curate in charge since 1895, and resides at Aylsham road, Upper Hellesdon. The Norwich City Lunatic Asylum, locally in this parish is described under Norwich. Here also are the Links of the Royal Norwich Golf Club formed in 1893; there is a full course of 18 holes, with ladies course of 9 holes, and a good Club house on the ground. The extensive brick works of Mr. Charles Cunnell are in this parish; here are also the large brick and tile works of Mr. Chas. Middleton. The Bishop of Norwich is the lord of the manor. Chas. Gambling Gowing esq. of the Manor house; Charles W Middleton esq. Charles Cunnell esq. of Newmarket road, Norwich, Sir Harry Bullard M.P, and J. H. Gurney esq. are the principal landowners. The soil is sand and gravel; subsoil, clay, limestone and gravel. The chief crops are of the usual kind, viz. wheat, oats, barley and turnips. The area is 2,024 acres, of which 1,159 acres are in the county and 865 in the hamlet; rateable value, £3,127; the population in 1891 was 451 for the whole parish, including 302 officers and inmates in the Norwich City Lunatic Asylum.
