Historical Description

HETHERSETT is a parish and an extensive and very pleasant village on the high road from London to Norwich, with a station in Ketteringham parish 1 mile south from the village, on the Ely and Norwich section of the Great Eastern railway, and is 120 miles from London, 4 north-east from Wymondham and 5 ½ south-west from Norwich, in the Southern division of the county, Swainsthorpe petty sessional division, Humbleyard hundred, Henstead union, Norwich county court district, rural deanery of Humbleyard, archdeaconry of Norfolk and diocese of Norwich. The church of St. Remigius, built about 1350 on the site of an earlier structure, is a plain building of flint in the Late Decorated style, consisting of nave, aisles, north porch and an embattled western tower with small wooden spire containing 6 bells: the chancel has been in ruins since 1535: the organ was given by the late Henry Back esq. in 1874: in the south aisle is an altar-tomb of the 14th century, with effigies, to Sir R Berney and his wife, and a mural monument with arms to Isaac Motham, 1703—4, and Elizabeth, his wife, 1699: there is a memorial window to the Rev. Arthur Taylor, formerly vicar of Paston, d. 4 Feb. 1881, besides others: the pulpit, of oak, is a memorial to Jeremy Day, rector of this parish, 1820—55, d. 1 Nov. 1855: the church was reseated in 1857, and has since been restored: the quasi-chancel was decorated in 1866 and the rest of the building in 1874: there are 400 sittings, 240 being free. The register dates from the year 1616. The living is a rectory, with that of Canteloffe annexed, average tithe rent-charge £578, joint net yearly value £480, including 58 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of Caius College, Cambridge, and held since 1856 by the Rev. William Reynolds Collett M. A. late fellow of that college, rural dean of Humbleyard and honorary canon of Norwich. There is a Wesleyan chapel here seating about 200. The Baptists hold their services in the British school. The charities, now consolidated, amount to £60 yearly, of which £40 is distributed in clothing and £20 applied to educational purposes. The Oak of Reformation, under which Robert Ket and his followers took a solemn oath to reform the abuses of Church and State, in the insurrection of 1549, is still standing on the high road from Wymondham to Hethersett. In the year 1800 the common and village green were inclosed, and the parishioners claimed and obtained part of Wymondham common as being within this parish, on the ground that they had buried a dean men found upon it after the parish officers had refused to inter him. Thickthorn Hall, a modern residence, the property of John Henry Gurney, esq. of Keswick Hall, Norwich, is now occupied by Mrs. Hay Gurney. Hethersett Hall, the seat of Mrs. Henry Back, is a large modern mansion on the south side of the village, near the church, pleasantly situated in a park of about 60 acres. Hethersett Old Hall, the seat of J. Alfred Back esq. originally built about the 15th century, was much enlarged in 1774, and has a fine avenue of chestnut trees. Hurn House, the property and residence of Wm. Henry Back esq. was erected in 1893 on the hall estate; Hill House and Orchard Lodge are also the property of W. H. Back esq.: the former is occupied by Col. Herbert Bruce Jacob, the latter is unoccupied. Wood Hall is the residence of Mrs. C. Bullard. William Henry Back esq. who is lord of the manor, John Henry Gurney esq. Lieut.-Col. Sir Francis George Manningham Bioleau bart, V. D. of Ketteringham Park, the trustees of Col. Charles Norgate, and John Alfred Back esq. are the principal landowners. The soil is loamy; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley, turnips, hay and beetroot.
