Historical Description

Holt is a market-town and parish in the hundred of Holt. It is delightfully situated on a hill, 121 miles from London. Camden observes, that Holt "is so called from its wood." This town is neatly built. Here is a Free School, founded by Sir John Gresham, knight, lord mayor of London, 1546; there is an handsome endowment for thirty free scholars; the house is substantial, and is situate in the marketplace. The patronage and government of it is in the fishmonger’s company, London, under whom are also twenty-four visitors, appointed by the company for life, from among the gentlemen of the neighbourhood. To this school belong a scholarship and fellowship in Sydney College, Cambridge.

There is also a Sessions House, and a handsome building for the reception of the poor, who are governed agreeably to the tenor of Mr. Gilbert’s act. Great part of this town was destroyed by fire 1708. The quarter sessions for the county are held by adjournment twice a year; namely, at Michaelmas and Christmas. Holt has a weekly market on Saturday, which is well supplied, especially with corn. The two fairs in April and November, which continue each two days, are frequented by the neighbouring gentry.

The London post comes in every day, Monday excepted, at two o’clock in the afternoon, and goes out every day, except Saturday, at eleven in the morning. All the grocery, &c. sent to this town by sea, is shipped from Harrison’s wharf, St. Catherine’s, to Blakeney or Cley, the nearest seaports.—Sir Thomas Gresham, the munificent founder of the Royal Exchange and Gresham College, was born near this town; Sir Thomas served sheriff’ of London in his brother’s mayoralty. The principal inns at Holt are the Feathers and the Lion. The country surrounding Holt is the most diversified by hill and dale of any place in this county.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

HOLT is a small market town and parish and the head of a county court district and petty sessional division, with a station on the Eastern section of the Midland and Great Northern, joint railway, 23 miles north-north-west from Norwich, 18 north-by-east from Dereham, 12 north-east from Fakenham, 10 west-by-south from Cromer and 123 from London by road, in the Northern division of the county, Erpingham union. Holt hundred, rural deanery of Holt and archdeaconry and diocese of Norwich. The word”holt,” in Saxon, signifies a wood, whence it is inferred that the town was surrounded by timber. In the reign of Edward the Confessor it was held in royal demesne and after the Conquest the lordship belonged to the family of De Vaux, or De Vallibus. The town, remarkable for the purity of its air, is pleasantly situated on rising ground, in the midst of a fertile district, and commands a delightful prospect of the surrounding country: in the year 1708 a destructive fire consumed nearly every house and building in the town, including the market stalls, and greatly injured the church. The town is paved and is lighted with gas, from works on Spouts Common, the property of a limited company and supplied with water from works erected in 1885 by the Erpingham Rural Sanitary Authority; these include a tower of red brick in the Shirehall Plain, 56 feet in height, with a tank holding 15,000 gallons; the town has also been thoroughly drained, and the total cost of the waterworks and drainage was over £5,000. The church of St. Andrew is an edifice in the Decorated and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and a western tower containing a clock and One bell; it once had a lofty spire which served as a landmark: in the church are several mural monuments, including one to John Holmes, for more than 30 years master of the Grammar school and author of a Greek Grammar; and others to Edmund Hobart and to the Newdegate and Briggs families: the communion table, presented in 1883 by Sir Alfred Jodrell bart. J.P. of Bayfield Hall, in memory of his brother, the late Edward Jodrell esq. is of cedar-wood grown on the Bayfield estate and olive-wood brought by his late brother from Italy: the communion plate includes a flagon, presented by King George the Second when Prince of Wales; a paten, given by Sir Robert Walpole and one by Lord Charles Townshend: the fine organ was built in 1882, at a cost, including organ-chamber, of about £500: the church was reseated in 1864, under the direction of Mr. W. Butterfield, architect, and the chancel new roofed in 1887: the church affords 350 sittings. The register dates from the year 1558. The living is a rectory, average tithe rent-charge £438, gross yearly value £529, with 57 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Master and fellows of St. John’s College, Cambridge, and held since 1853 by the Rev. Edward Brumell B.D. formerly fellow and tutor of that college rural dean of Holt and surrogate. The Wesleyan chapel, built in 1838, was restored in 1893 at a cost of £750 anti will seat 250 persons: the Primitive Methodist chapel, built in 1872, has 220 sittings, 180 being free. The Free Methodist chapel, erected in 1862 at a cost of about £2,000, is of brick and flint in the Gothic style, and affords 400 sittings. The Literary Institute has a library of about 4,000 volumes and is well supported. The market for corn is held on Wednesday and there is a cattle sale every alternate Friday during the first portion of the year. The bank of Messrs. Barclay & Col. Lim. in High street, is a structure of brick erected in 1891 by the late firm of Gurneys, Birkbeck, Barelay and Buxton. The fairs, chiefly for stock, are held on April 25th and November 25th and the following days; and a statute fair for hiring servants is held at Michaelmas. Holt Hall, the seat of John Rogers esq. M.A., J.P. is a brick mansion in the Elizabethan style, one mile east of the town, in grounds tastefully laid out and containing a fine piece of water. Thomas Girdlestone, an eminent physician and author of several mEdical works, was born here in 1758 and died in 1823. William Withers esq. who wrote several works on the rearing and planting of forest trees, was also a native of Holt. Thomas Cooper, master of the Grammar school during part of the 17th century, is said to have been hanged in front of the school-house for his adherence to the cause of Charles I. In 1810 the commons and heaths that surrounded the town were enclosed for cultivation; 120 acres were allotted for the supply of fuel and pasturage to certain householders whose yearly rent is under £10, and on the east side, towards Cromer, are now handsome and thriving plantations of forest trees, interspersed with dwelling housea. John Henry Gurney esq. of Keswick Hall, is lord of the manors of Holt, Holt Hales and Holt Market. The Fishmongers’ Company are lords of the manor of Holt Pereers. The chief landowners are John Rogers esq. and the trustees of the late George Barker. The soil is light and the land in a high state of cultivation. The area is 2,996 acres of land and 13 of water; rateable value, £6,161; the population in 1891 was 1,750.
