Historical Description

Honingham has given rise to Honingham Hall, the seat of Lord Bayning.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

HONINGHAM is a village and parish on the road from East Dereham to Norwich, 5 miles south from Attlebridge station on the Midland and Great Northern joint Railway and 8 miles east from Dereham, in the Mid division of the county, hundred and petty sessional division of Forehoe, St. Faith’s union, Norwich county court district, rural deanery of Hingham, Forehoe division, archdeaconry of Norfolk and diocese of Norwich. The church of St. Andrew, situated one mile east of the village, is a building of flint, in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing 5 bells; the fifth bell was presented in 1878 by the Rev. W. C. Ward, and the organ was given in 1875 by Emma (Fellowes), wife of Henry (Townshend, afterwards Powlett), 3rd Baron Bayning of Foxley, and vicar of Honingham, at whose death, 5 Aug. 1866, this title became extinct: on the south wall of the chancel is a monument of black and white marble, with a medallion portrait in armour to Sir Thomas Richardson kt. Master of Cramond, ob. 12 March, 1642; on either side are Ionic shafts, supporting an ornamental scrolled cornice, surmounted by a quartered shield of arms with supporters, crest and mantling and the motto “Virtute acquiritur honos,” below which on either side are oval shields, inclosed in scroll-work, bearing the impaled arms of his wives Elizabeth (Hewitt) and Mary (Sandys) and beneath the medallion is an inscription in Latin; here is also a monument with armorial insignia to Thomas, his son, 1st Baron Cramond, ob. 16 May, 1674, and Anne (Gurney) his wife, ob. 31 Jan. 1677, and another to Henry, son of the preceding, and 2nd Baron Cramond M.A. Camb. ob. 5 Jan. 1701: in the church were also buried Mary, 5th daughter of Sir Thomas Richardson kt. Lord Chief Justice of England, who died 3 March, 1638, and Henry, son of Sir Thomas Richardson kt. buried 6 Sept. 1663: there are 175 sittings. The register dates from the year 1561. The living is a discharged vicarage, with that of East Tuddenham annexed, average tithe rent-charge £485, joint net yearly value £322, including 102 acres of glebe, in the gift of the trustees of the late Lady Bayning, and held since 1892 by the Rev. Herbert James Bodington M.A. of Queen’s College, Oxford, who resides at East Tuddenham. The Du Quesne charity, producing £2 10s. yearly, is distributed in bread £1 10s. to the parish clerk 10s. and books for children 10s. The coal charity is a payment by the Hon. A. E. Fellowes M.P. in lieu of fen land, once supplying turf for the cottages; the income, about £12 annually, is distributed to all the cottages. The manor of Honingham was purchased about 1600 of William Barrow esq. by Thomas Richardson esq. afterwards Sir Thomas Richardson kt. Chief Justice of the Kings Bench, 1631, and previously (1620—22) Speaker of the House of Commons, at which time he was knighted, and the manor remained in that family until his grandson, Thomas, 1st Baron Cramond, sold it to Richard Baylie D.D. president of St. John’s College, Oxford, and dean of Sarum 1635—67. The barony of Cramond in Scotland, originally granted (23 Feb. 1627—8) to Elizabeth, wife of the Chief Justice, is supposed to have become extinct on the death (28 July, 1735) of, William, 5th baron. The Hon. Ailwyn Edward Fellowes M.P., J.P. resides at Honingham Hall, a fine old mansion in the Elizabethan style, standing in a well-wooded park of 57 acres. Honingham Thorpe is the residence of Charles Sutton Lewin esq. The trustees of Lady Bayning are lords of the manor and sole landowners. The soil varies from a stiff clay to a blowing sand. The chief crops are wheat, barley and turnips. The area is 2,606 acres; rateable value, £2,664; the population in 1891 was 316.

The children of this place attend the National school at East Tuddenham.
