Historical Description

HORSTEAD-WITH-STANNINGHALL form a parish; the former is a village on the bank of the navigable Bure, half a mile from Coltishall station on the Great Eastern railway and 6 miles north-by-east from Norwich (the latter is 2 miles south from Horstead, and consists of one farm only), in the Eastern division of the county, hundred and petty sessional division of Taverham, union of St. Faith’s, Norwich county court district, rural deanery of Taverham and archdeaconry and diocese of Norwich. By an order which came into operation March 25, 1885, a detached part of Frettenham was amalgamated with this parish. The church of All Saints is a structure of flint in the Decorated style, consisting of chancel with south chapel, nave, south aisle, south porch and an embattled western tower containing 3 bells: the roofs are of open timber work, massive and rich in detail: the church was restored and rebuilt in 1879, at a cost of £3,178, under the superintendence of Mr. R. Makilwaine Phipson F.S.A, architect, and has 200 sittings. The register dates from the year 1588. The living is a rectory, average yearly value from tithe rent-charge £436; net income £366, with 58 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Provost and Fellows of Kings College, Cambridge, and held since 1881 by the Rev. Russell Day M.A. late fellow of that college. At Stanninghall are the ruins of a church, which fell into decay in the time of Queen Elizabeth. Between 6 and 7 acres of poor land are vested in six trustees for the benefit of the poor of the parish: the land is let in small plots to various tenants, and the rents are expended in coals at Christmas for the benefit of the poor. Horstead Hall, erected in 1835, a mansion in the Elizabethan style, pleasantly situated in a dale on the river Bure, 18 the seat of Sir Edward Birkbeck bart. D.L., J.P. Horstead House, is the residence of Michael Falcon esq. Heggatt Hall, a fine Elizabethan house, about a mile from the village, and close to Haggard or Heggatt Street, is the property of Mrs. Blake Humfrey, of Wroxham, and now occupied by Mrs. Buckworth. The Provost and Fellows of Kings College, Cambridge, are lords of the manor, and there is also a sub-manor. Mrs. Blake Humfrey, Sir Edward Birkbeck bart., William Henry Trafford esq. of The Hall, Wroxham, and Col. Edward John Stracey-Clitherow, of Boston House, New Brentford, Middlesex, are the chief landowners. The soil is sand and gravel; subsoil, marl. The chief crops are wheat, turnips and barley. The area is 2,818 acres of land and 31 of water; rateable value, £3,017 12s. 6d.; the population in 1891 was 583.

A School Board of 5 members was formed August 4, 1874; Christopher Cushion, Buxton, clerk to the board; James Hunter, Coltishall, attendance officer.
