Historical Description

Ten miles northwest from Yarmouth is the village of LUDHAM, where formerly was a palace of the bishops of Norwich. It originally belonged to the abbot of St. Bennet at the Holme, and was built by Abbot Martin; at the Reformation it was given to the bishop of Norwich in exchange; the greatest part of it was burnt in 1611. A brick chapel, built by Dr. Edmund Freke, Bishop of Norwich, was in 1762 converted into a barn. Ludham was formerly a market town.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

LUDHAM is a parish and small town, near the navigable Bure, 2 miles south-west from Potter-Heigham station on the Midland and Great Northern joint railway, 13 north-east from Norwich, 13 north-west from Yarmouth and 13 south-east from North Walsham in the Eastern division of the county, Tunstead and Happing petty sessional division, Smallburgh union, Tunstead hundred, Norwich county court district, rural deanery of Waxham Happing division, archdeaconry of Norfolk and diocese of Norwich. The church of St. Catherine is a building of stone and flint, in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, clerestoried nave of six bays, aisles and an embattled western tower containing a clock and 5 bells, the chancel, which is separated from the nave by a richly carved screen, was restored in 1861: the interior of the church was thoroughly restored and reseated in 1891 at a total cost of about £1,800: there are 500 sittings. The date of the earliest register is 1583. The living is a vicarage, average tithe rent-charge, £211; net yearly value £213, including 27 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Norwich, and held since 1886 by the Rev. John James Willmott. Here are Baptist and Wesleyan chapels. About £65, less land tax, poor rate, tithe &c. the proceeds of land given at the Inclosure and from the sale of town property, is annually divided among the poor in coals. The place formerly had both a market and a fair, granted by Elizabeth to Bishop Redman; the market is given up, but the fair is held on the Thursday and Friday after Trinity Sunday, chiefly for pleasure. This place, after the dissolution of the abbey of of St. Bene’t-at-the-Hulme or Hulme, near Horning, to which the manor belonged, was given by Henry VIII. to the Bishop of Norwich, who converted the Grange into an episcopal dwelling: the greater part was burnt down in 1611, but the palace was restored and enlarged by Bishop Harsnet, who built a chapel of brick, which, after the bishops ceased to dwell here, was converted into a granary, and the remainder of the edifice into a farmhouse, now called Ludham Hall. The Bishop of Norwich is lord of the manor; Thomas Slipper esq. of Bradeston Hall, the trustees of the late William Augustus Page esq. Ash Rudd esq. of East Ruston Hall, Alfred Neave esq. William Frederick Green esq. of the Grange, Wroxham, the trustees of the late Mrs. Hacon and the trustees of the late Aaron Neave esq. are the chief landowners. The soil is mixed; subsoil, sand and brick earth. The chief crops are wheat, oats and barley. The area is 3,004 acres; rateable value, £4,899; the population in 1891 was 767.

A School Board of 5 members was formed April 18, 1872; W. H. Cooke, Stalham, clerk to the board & attendance officer.

Board School (mixed), built in 1873 at a cost of £1,350, and enlarged 1892, at a cost of about £600, for 200 children; average attendance, 187.
