Historical Description

MARHAM is a parish and village, 4 miles south-west from Narborough station on the Lynn and Dereham section of the Great Eastern railway, 7 west from Swaffham and 9 north-east from Downham, in the South Western division of the county, Clackclose hundred and petty sessional division, Downham union and county court district, rural deanery of Fincham, archdeaconry of Lynn and diocese of Norwich. The church of the Holy Trinity is a large building of flint and stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, south aisle, south porch and a lofty embattled western tower, with quoins of freestone and containing 6 bells: about 1844 the church was new roofed and several stained windows erected, some of which were presented by the late Henry Villebois esq. of Marham Hall, who died in 1886: in the church is an ancient tomb, with recumbent effigies of native chalk, to John Steward esq. and Anne (Shouldham), his wife, buried here in 1603—4: in 1867 the north wall of the nave was restored and in 1875 the whole of the interior was restored and re-seated at a cost of £1,500; of this amount £250 was contributed by St. John’s College, Cambridge, for improvements in the chancel: there are 200 sittings. The churchyard was considerably enlarged in 1864. The register dates from the year 1562. The living is a vicarage, average tithe rent-charge £277, net yearly value £350, with 56 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of St. John’s College, Cambridge, and held since 1868 by the Rev. Henry Josiah Sharpe M.A. late fellow of that college. There are Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist chapels here. In 1799 two poor’s allotments were awarded under the Inclosure Act, containing 200 acres of fen land: in 1869—70, by a scheme of the Charity Commissioners, these allotments were let and now produce about £75 yearly, the net proceeds being distributed in coals. There was formerly here a nunnery of the Cistercian order, belonging to Ely Abbey, founded in 1249 by Maud (de Verdun), wife of John Fitzalan, 5th Earl of Arundel, and dedicated to SS. Mary, Barbara, and Edmund the King: at the Dissolution, when there were 10 nuns and revenues estimated at £33, it was granted to Sir Nicholas and Robert Hare: some remains of it may be seen at a farm-house and outbuildings a little west of the church, and joining the Abbey Farm. In this parish is a reservoir belonging to the Wisbech Water Works for supplying Wisbech, March and other places. Marham House, the residence of Col. Hugh Smith Baillie and his wife, the Viscountess Glentworth, was principally built in 1861. Marham Hall is the residence of Mr. Thomas Brown, the well-known breeder of Cotswold sheep and red-polled cattle. Thomas Leigh Hare esq. M.P. of the Hall, Stow Rardolph, who is lord of the manor of New Hall and Shouldham, and Viscountess Glentworth, who is lady of the manor of Old Hall and Westacre, are the chief landowners. The soil is sand and peat; subsoil, principally chalk. The chief crops are roots, barley, seeds and wheat. The area is 3,981 acres; rateable value, £2,806; the population in 1891 was 583.

National School (mixed), considerably enlarged in 1872 & now holding 140 scholars; average attendance, 120.
