Historical Description

MARTHAM is a parish and large village delightfully situated on rising ground above the marshes, with a station on the Midland and Great Northern joint railway, about 10 miles north-north-west from Yarmouth, in the Eastern division of the county, incorporated hundred, petty sessional division and incorporation of East and West Flegg, county court district of Great Yarmouth, rural deanery of Flegg and archdeaconry and diocese of Norwich. The church of St. Mary is a fine structure of Norfolk flint with stone dressings, chiefly in the Early Perpendicular style, and consists of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and a lofty embattled western tower of fine proportions containing a clock and 6 bells: the chancel was rebuilt in 1855 at a cost of nearly £8,000, given by Mrs. Dawson, subsequently Mrs. Major Longley and daughter of the Rev. George Pearse M.A. vicar here from December, 1834, as a memorial to her first husband, the Rev. Jonathan Dawson M.A. to whom there is a raised altar tomb: the cast window is stained, and there are memorial windows to Mrs. Pearse and to her daughter Mrs. Inigo Jones, besides some curious ancient glass: the ancient octagonal font bears, in panels, sculptured representations of the Seven Sacraments of the Catholic Church and the Last Judgment: the church has been completely restored, and affords 360 sittings. The register dates from the year 1558 and is in an excellent state of preservation. The living is a discharged vicarage, average tithe rent-charge £267, net yearly value £238, including 7 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Norwich, and held since 1876 by the Rev. George Merriman M.A. of Exeter College, Oxford, and rural dean of Flegg; the great tithes belong to the Dean and Chapter of Norwich. Roger Gunton, in 1170, gave the church to the prior and convent of Norwich for the redemption of his soul.” There are Baptist and Primitive Methodist chapels here. There are charitable bequests for the benefit of the poor of the parish; also 78 acres of land, which were awarded at the enclosure in 1812. The poor’s land or fuel charity is distributed in coals. Alfred Mabbott Wiseman esq. is lord of the manor. John Love esq. the Rev. Benjamin Rising, vicar of Moreton, Newport, Salop, Samuel Aldred esq. of Yarmouth and William Gladstone Ulph, of The Grange, Martham, are the chief landowners. There are many small landowners also. Martham Broad, several acres in extent, is in the north part of the parish. The soil is light mixed; subsoil, clay and gravel. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area is 2,690 acres; rateable value, £5,381; The population in 1891 was 1,177.

Schools

A Free School was founded here pursuant to the will of Christopher Amis, who left £110 for that purpose in 1622; this sum, with several small donations, was laid out in purchasing the school house & 5a. 1r. of land, which were exchanged at the inclosure in 1812 for 7a. 3r. 7p.: the school has ceased to exist, but the old school house is now let at a rental of £14 a year, which sum is added to the charities. The Creasy, Bowman & Amis charities are now consolidated by the name of the “Martham Education Charity,” under a scheme of the Charity Commissioners issued in 1883: the funds are applied in paying the school fees & in gifts of clothing to about 60 children: attending the Board school.

A School Board of 5 members was formed March 14, 1872; Mark Chubbock, clerk to the board; Richard Rogers, Martham, attendance officer.

Board (mixed), built in 1879 at a cost of £563, & enlarged in 1895 at a further cost of £1,135; for about 308 children; average attendance, 242.
