Historical Description
Passing through Bilney and East Winch we observe Middleton; this is a parish in the hundred of Freebridge Lynn, two miles from Lynn, and 94 from London. This was anciently the seat of the noble family of Scales, whose gatehouse, built in the reign of Henry the Sixth, yet remains. This family founded Blackborough Priory. Roger de Scales and Maud his wife, in the reign of Henry the Second, built and dedicated this priory to the Virgin Mary and St. Catherine, in which there were religious of both sexes; but Robert, son of the said Roger de Scales, settled this house upon the nuns of the order of St. Benedict, who were ten in number, and continued till the general suppression. At Hardwick turnpike gate, on the left, is a turnpike road to Brandon and Downham.
MIDDLETON is a parish and village, with a station, 1 ¼ miles north from the village, on the Lynn and Dereham section of the Great Eastern railway, 4 miles south-south-east from Lynn, in the North-western division of the county, hundred, petty sessional division and union of Freebridge Lynn, county court district of Lynn, rural deanery of Lynn Freebridge, archdeaconry of Lynn and diocese of Norwich. The church of St. Mary the Virgin is an ancient edifice of carr stone and brick in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, clerestoried nave, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower containing one bell: the chancel was restored in 1862, when a stained east window was presented by E. L. Wood esq.; the west window was the gift of the late Sir Lewis Whincop Jarvis kt. who also presented a cedar wood pulpit, reading desk and lectern; the communion table was given in 1867 as a memorial to certain members of the Blencowe family: the church was reseated in 1880 at a cost of £300; and in 1892 the organ was restored and placed in the chancel and choir stalls erected at a cost of £70; there are piscinae in the chancel and south aisle: The church affords 200 sittings. The register dates from the year 1560, and there is also a list of vicars from the year 1598. The living is a vicarage, average tithe rent-charge £230, net yearly value £210, including 12 acres of glebe, with residence in the gift of Alfred Haley esq. of Wakefield, Yorkshire, and held since 1894 by the Rev. Charles Thomas Alexander M.A. of Christ College, Cambridge. Three mission rooms have been recently erected in the parish, one at Blackborough in 1892, another at Fair green in 1894, and the third at Tower end, in each of which divine service is held once on Sunday and once during the week, the rooms being used during the remainder of the week as Working men’s club and reading rooms. Here is a small Wesleyan chapel, built in 1860 and a meeting room for the Salvation army. Curie’s and Hope’s charities, of £1 7s. yearly, are for poor widows. At Blackborough are almshouses for 10 poor persons. In the vale of the Nar, 1 mile south, are the ruins of Blackborough Priory, founded by Roger Seales, in the time of Henry I. for Benedictine nuns and was dedicated to SS. Mary and Catherine; at its dissolution the revenues were estimated at £42. Middleton Hall is the residence of the Hon. Misses Milles. Middleton Towers, restored and enlarged in 1860, is a fine castellated mansion surrounded by a moat full of water, it is the property of Messrs. G. Watkinson & Sons, of Halifax, Yorkshire, and is now (1896) occupied by Mrs. Saunders. The soil is light sand and loam, with a little fen; subsoil, carr stone, clay and sand. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and turnips. The parish contains 3,045 acres; rateable value, £3,544; the population in 1891 was 882.
