Historical Description

Narborough, which is five miles distant from Swaffham, and 96 from London, and in the hundred of South Greenhoe. This small village is situated on the river Nar. Sir Henry Spelman says, that it was a British city in the time of Uther Pendragon. A small circular fort is still visible; supposed to have been thrown up by the Danes, under Sweyn, in 1003.

On the right of Narborough is Narford Hall, the seat of Brigg Price Fountaine, Esq. It was erected by Sir Andrew Fountaine, the friend of Pope. Mr. Britton has enumerated the fine collection of paintings which this house contains. On the right also is Narborough Hall, the seat of Samuel Tyssen, Esq.

NARBOROUGH (or Narburgh) is a parish and village on the south bank of the river Nar, with a station on the Lynn and Dereham section of the Great Eastern railway, 8 ½ miles east-south-east from Lynn, 5 ½ north-west from Swaffham and 107 ½ from London, in the South Western division of the county. South Greenhoe hundred and petty sessional division, Swaffham union and county court district, rural deanery of Cranwich, north division, archdeaconry of Lynn and diocese of Norwich. The church of All Saints is a building of flint in the Early English and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, nave of three bays, aisles, south porch and embattled western tower containing one bell: in the church are several monuments to the Spelman family and others, 1607—76; on the south side of the chancel are two stained windows, one to the father of the Rev. W. E. Alfree M.A. late vicar, d. 18 May, 1856, and the other to the late Herbert C. Marriott esq. d. 31 Oct. 1864: in the north aisle is a window containing some old glass, including a shield of the Spelman arms: the church was restored and reseated in 1865: the chancel retains several ancient brasses and a double piscina, and there is a single piscina in the north aisle: the church affords 290 sittings. The register dates from the year 1596. The living is a vicarage, consolidated with Narford, average tithe rent-charge £347, joint net yearly value £403, including 19 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of R. Bright-Betton esq. and held since 1886 by the Rev. Edward Augustus Bright-Betton B.A. of University College, Durham. There is a Wesleyan chapel, built by Henry Boyce esq. The Foresters' Hall, built in 1886, at a cost of £1,000, holds 400 persons, and is available for public meetings, concerts and other entertainments. There are charities amounting to £40 yearly, left in 1810 by the Rev. Henry Spelman, a former vicar. A very considerable trade is carried on by the Messrs. Vynne and Everett Limited, as maltsters and merchants. Traces of a high entrenchment connected with a fosse and rampart may be traced for 8 miles. Narborough Hall, the seat of Joseph Critchley Martin esq. J. P. lord of the manor, is a noble and ancient mansion, situated in a well-wooded park; the other principal landowners are Henry Boyce esq. the trustees of the late John S. Hotblack esq. and Viscountess Glentworth. The soil is sandy; subsoil, chalk. The chief crops are wheat, barley and turnips. The area is 3,472 acres; rateable value, £2,966; the population in 1891 was 427.

Parochial School (mixed) (boys & girls), built in 1870, for 112 children; average attendance, 105; also a Sunday school, partly endowed.
