Historical Description

NECTON (formerly called Neigbton) is a parish and village, 2 ½ miles south from the Dunham station on the Lynn and Dereham section of the Great Eastern railway and 1 ½ north from Holme Hale station on the Swaffham and Thetford section of the same line, 4 east from Swaffham, in the South Western division of the county, South Greenhoe hundred and petty sessional division, Swaffham union and county court district, rural deanery of Cranwich north division, archdeaconry of Lynn and diocese of Norwich. The church of All Saints is a building of flint, in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel with chapel of St. Catherine, clerestoried nave of four bays, south-west or Mason chapel, aisles, vestries and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles and fleche, or spirelet, of metal work; the tower was rebuilt in 1864—5, at a cost of about £1,200, and contains a clock and 6 bells: the roof of the church is of exquisite workmanship and adorned with ten large figures of angels, carved in oak: there are twelve stained windows: the reredos includes a painting of the “Raising of Lazarus,” after Sebastian del Piombo: there are several mural tablets and brasses: the south aisle retains a double piscina, and in St. Catherine’s chapel is a single piscina: the pulpit, elaborately carved in oak, dates from 1636: there is a small western gallery of beautifully carved oak, and the church affords 325 sittings. The churchyard was considerably enlarged in 1889. The register dates from the year 1558. The living is a rectory, average tithe rent-charge £500, net yearly value £450, including 26 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Mrs. Povah, and held since 1887 by the Rev. Edward Hamilton Nelson M.A. of Trinity College, Dublin. Mr. Andrew Young is the lay impropriator of tithes, amounting to £252 yearly. Here are Baptist and Wesleyan Methodist chapels. There are charities of about £140 yearly value, being the rent of 137 acres of land chiefly in Great Fransham, but partly in Necton; a moiety of this sum is applied to the support of the school, the other moiety being devoted to church purposes. The village library was erected in 1861 by the late Lieut.-Col. Mason, and here science and art classes conducted by Mr. Arthur Stead are held once a week during the winter months. Robert Harvey Mason J.P., D.L. is lord of the manor and chief landowner, and resides at Necton Hall, a mansion surrounded by a finely-timbered park, which has been the property of the Mason family since the time of Henry VII. The soil is mixed; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley and roots. The area is 3,830 acres; rateable value, £3,737; the population in 1891 was 735.
