Historical Description

NORTHWOLD is a parish and village, on the road from Thetford to Lynn and on the river Wissey, 3 miles south-east from Stoke Ferry terminal station on a branch of the Great Eastern railway, 7 ½ north from Brandon and 95 from London, in the South Western division of the county, Grimshoe hundred and petty sessional division, Thetford union and county court district, Cranwich rural deanery south division, archdeaconry of Lynn and diocese of Norwich. The church of St. Andrew is a building chiefly of flint, in the Perpendicular and Early English styles, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, north and south porches and a western tower of the 14th century, with eight pinnacles, and containing a clock and 8 bells: the roof of the nave is of oak, painted and richly gilt and ornamented with figures of angels with extended wings; the carved font was given in 1882, and the very beautiful font cover in 1887, by the Rev. William Cowper Johnson M.A. rector 1880—92: the western arch is a fine example of the Perpendicular style: the church was reseated in 1852, and in Oct. 1895 the sacrarium was enlarged and refloored: the oak lectern was presented in 1894 by the family of the Rev. W. C. Johnson as a memorial to him. The church affords 640 sittings, 340 being free. The register dates from the year 1650. The living is a rectory, average tithe rent-charge £650, net yearly value £465, including 40 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Norwich, and held since 1892 by the Rev. Claude Cecil Thornton M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge, hon. canon of Norwich and rural dean of Hingham. There is a large Wesleyan chapel and a Primitive Methodist chapel. The village hall, formerly the school, is used for parochial meetings and entertainments. The reading room, an old farmhouse bearing the date 1635, was endowed by the late Mrs. Norman with £500 invested in Consols, and has a library of 150 volumes. Another library was given by the Rev. Richard Snowdon Smith M.A. rector (1873—80) and is now self-supporting. The almshouses for the poor are fourteen in number, five of which are at the disposal of the rector and churchwardens; the remaining nine were erected by the late Mrs. Norman in 1874, in memory of her husband, the Rev. Charles Manners Richard Norman M.A. rector from 1833, and endowed by her with £500 £2 ¾ per Cent, Consols for keeping them in repair. The charities include Atmere's of £25 every fifth year. Carter’s of £200 in £2 ¾ per Cent. Consols, and Richard Holden’s, consisting of 5. acres of land, left in 1736; there are other small sums of money left by different persons, for the benefit of the poor of this parish. A fair is held yearly on the 30th November and following day. There is a large chalk pit in this parish. At the Stoke end of the village is an ancient stone cross-similar to that at Hockwold. The village has a fire-engine purchased out of the church estate in 1814. H. S. Partridge esq. who is lord of the manor, John Carter esq. Lord Amherst of Hackney, of Didlington Hall, H. P. Mack esq. of Northwold lodge and John Burroughes Carter are the principal landowners. The soil is a mixture of loam, sand, chalk and fen; subsoil, chalk. The chief crops are wheat, barley and turnips. The area is 5,283 acres; rateable value, £5,445; the population in 1891 was 1,144.

Schools

The Norman National School was erected in 1873 on ground given by C. Carter esq. at the sole expense of the late Mrs. Norman, wife of the Rev. C. M. R. Norman M.A. at a cost of about £1,400 & endowed by her with £1,000; it will hold 140 children; average attendance, 112: the school has a library of 400 volumes.

Infants’, for 90 children; average attendance, 65: supported by an endowment of £90 yearly, by the late Mrs. Norman, from Consols; this school has also a library of 300 volumes, the gift of the same donor.
