Historical Description

PENTNEY is a village and scattered parish, five miles in length and one wide, with a station in the parish called Narborough on the Lynn and Dereham section of the Great Eastern railway; the village stands on the navigable river Nar, and is 6 ½ miles north-west-by-north from Swaffham and 8 ½ south-east-by-east from Lynn, is in the North Western division of the county, hundred, petty sessional division and union of Freebridge, Lynn, county court district of Lynn, rural deanery of Lynn (Norfolk), archdeaconry of Lynn and diocese of Norwich. The Ketlam brook, rising in Walton Wood, flows through this parish and falls into the Nar. The church of St. Mary Magdalen is an ancient structure, mostly of flint, with later additions of stone in various styles, and was enlarged from a small Norman chapel with an apse: it now consists of chancel, nave, south porch and an embattled western tower, containing one bell: there are sedilia, piscina and an aumbry, and the church affords 180 sittings. The register dates from the year 1730. The living is a vicarage, tithe modus £20, yearly value £43, including 13 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Rev. Edward Francis Edwards Hankinson M.A. of Billingford Hall, and held since 1890 by the Rev. James George, of St. Bees, who is also vicar of West Bilney. The Wesleyan chapel was built in 1882, and there is a small General Baptist chapel. The Town estate, of 50 acres (including the Fuel allotment, adjoining the station), and other charities, producing about £78 yearly, are under the management of the vicar and one churchwarden and three trustees appointed by the Charity Commissioners and the funds are distributed in coals to the poor and sums of 5s. each to 13 widows. About two miles west of the church formerly stood the priory of the Holy Trinity and SS, Mary the Virgin and Mary Magdalene, founded by R. de Vaux, for canons of the order of St. Augustine; the fine gateway is still standing and between it and the church is the shaft of an elegant way side cross. In 1468 the Premonstratensian convent of Wormegay was annexed to this priory, the revenues of which at its dissolution were estimated at £170. Captain Frederick Rennell Thackeray J.P. of Yarrow Honse, Vintrey, is lord of the manor of Ashwood and owner of about one-fourth of the land; there are no other large properties, but the estates of Captain R. H. Hamond, R.N., J.P. and of Clement Edward Royds Bentley esq. of West Bilney Hall, run into this parish; Messrs. John James Coulton, Augustus William Stratton and William Hewlett, are landowners; many of the smaller properties are copyhold, fine certain: nearly all the land is tithe free. The soil is chiefly sand and grave), but there is some heavy land. The four-course system of farming prevails; the drainage and water supply are good. Area, 2,305 acres; rateable value, £2,142; the population in 1891 was 493.

National School (mixed), West Bilney, about midway be ween the churches, erected in 1833 & since considerably enlarged for 105 children; average attendance, 90.
