Historical Description

SEDGEFORD is a parish and village, with a station three quarters of a mile north from the village, on the Hunstanton and West Norfolk (Great Eastern) junction railway, 13 miles north-north-east from Lynn and 10 south-west from Burnham Market, in the North Western division of the county, Smithdon hundred, Smithdon and Brothercross petty sessional division, Docking union, Lynn county court district, rural deanery of Heacham, archdeaconry of Lynn and diocese of Norwich. The church of St. Mary is an ancient building of stone and flint, in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, north and south porches, transept and a round tower with octagonal belfry stage, containing 3 bells; in the tower is a memorial window, with inscribed brass plate underneath, erected by some of the parishioners in 1864, to Martha, wife of C. F. Neville-Rolfe esq. of Heacham Hall, who died at Naples, 23 Jan. 1863: there are other memorial windows to C. F. Neville-Rolfe esq. d. 1869: the church was repaired and reseated about 1842, and was restored in 1882 at a cost of about £2,200, and now affords 320 sittings. The register dates from the year 1560. The living is a vicarage united to the sinecure rectory of Southmere, or Summerfield, average tithe rent-charge £470, net yearly value £215, including g acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Norwich and the Provost and Fellows of Eton College alternately, and held, the vicarage since 1857 and the rectory since 1874, by the Rev. James Ambrose Ogle M.A, of Brazenose College, Oxford. Here is a Wesleyan chapel, built in 1830, and a Primitive Methodist chapel, erected in 1861. Rolfe’s chanty of £14 14s. 8d. yearly for clothing, and £18 yearly, the rent of the fuel allotment of 9 acres, is expended in coals for the poor. In the parish is a corn mill, a sand pit and a chalk quarry. Sedgeford Hall is the residence of Walter Freeman Hunt esq. M.A., J.P. The Ecclesiastical Commissioners, who are lords of the manor, Eustace Neville-Rolfe esq. of Heacham Hall, Hamon le Strange esq. of Hunstanton Hall, Sir E. Green bart. and John Davy esq. are chief landowners. The soil is of a chalky nature; the subsoil, principally chalk. The chief crops are wheat, barley, turnips, mangolds and some land in pasture. The area is 4,180 acres; rateable value, £3,588; the population in 1891 was 691.
