Historical Description

Sherringham is a parish in the hundred of North Erpingham, five miles from Holt; and is a vicarage. The church of Sherringham was given by Walter Giffard, Earl of Buckingham, in the reign of Henry the Second, to the abbey of Nuthall in Buckinghamshire; here was a cell of Black Canons, for some time belonging to that abbey.

Sherringham Cliff, on one side, looks full upon the sea, and, on the other, over a most diversified country; many hills scattered wildly about, numerous cultivated inclosures, and several villages. Sherringham Bower is the seat of Mrs. Upcher.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

SHERINGHAM is a parish extending to the sea shore, and comprising the villages of Upper & Lower Sheringham, with a station on the Midland and Great Northern joint branch railway from Lynn and Norwich, via Holt, 4 miles east-north-east from Holt, 14 north-north-west from North Walsham, 142 from London and 4 from Cromer by rail; in the Northern division of the county, North Erpingham hundred and petty sessional division, Erpingham union, Holt county court district, rural deanery of Repps, and archdeaconry and diocese of Norwich. The surrounding scenery, richly diversified with woodland, is in some parts beautifully picturesque: the village of Upper Sheringham is supplied with excellent water, conveyed by pipes from a constant spring to a large reservoir, formed in 1814 by the late Abbot Upcher esq. The church of All Saints, in Upper Sheringham, is a building of flint, with stone dressings, in the Early and Later English styles, consisting of chancel, clerestoried nave, aisles, south porch and a lofty embattled western tower, containing 6 bells, the rood screen and loft remain: in the chancel is a monument of white marble to Abbot Upcher esq. d. 1819: a slab inscribed to Walter Marlow, canon of Notley, and sometime rector, ob. 1451: and memorial windows to the Hon. Mrs. Charlotte Upcher, d. 1857, and to Miss Upcher, daughter of the late Henry Ramey Upcher esq. d. 1863; there is a brass to John Hook, ob. 1513, and Magdalene bis wife, and one in the pavement near the south porch to Thomas Burgess, ob. 1540: and a monument to Thomas Heath, who was robbed and murdered 4 Feb. 1635: the communion plate includes a chalice of the 16th century-there are about 400 sittings. The register dates from the year 1670. The living is a vicarage, gross yearly value £150, in the gift of the Bishop of Norwich, and held since 1891 by the Rev. John Sheldon Barford M.A. of St. Catherine’s College, Cambridge. A new vicarage house is now (1896) in course of erection from plans furnished by Mr. H. J. Green, of Norwich, diocesan surveyor. The fuel allotment of 34 acres is cut by the poor, who have also £19 yearly from charities.
