Historical Description

SPROWSTON is an extensive parish and very straggling village, 2 miles north from Norwich, in the Eastern division of the county, Taverham hundred and petty sessional division, St. Faith’s union, Norwich county court district, rural deanery of Taverham and archdeaconry and diocese of Norwich. The church of SS. Mary and Margaret is an ancient edifice of flint and stone, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles and an embattled western tower of brick, with pinnacles and containing 3 bells: the monuments include four, now much dilapidated, to the Corbet family, dating from 1559 to 1617; others to the Micklethwaits, 1805; one to the Morse family, 1842, and several mural tablets, including one in the chancel to Sir Thomas Adams bart. lord mayor of London in 1645, d. 24 Feb. 1667: the stained east window was given by Mrs. Rushmore in 1867; the chancel was restored in 1890 by the Ecclesiastical Commissioners: there are 300 sittings. The register dates from the year 1727. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £220, including 17 ½ acres of glebe, with residence, erected in 1882, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Norwich, and held since 1891 by the Rev. James-Wickham M.A. of St. John’s College, Oxford. The church of St. Cuthbert, erected in 1885, as a chapel of ease to that of SS. Mary and Margaret, is an edifice of brick with stone facings, in the Lancet style, consisting of nave only and a bell cote for one bell: it was built at a cost of about £2,300 of which upwards of £1,600 and the site were given by the late John Gurney esq.: there are 360 sittings. Here is a. Primitive Methodist chapel. A sum of £30 yearly is expended in fuel for the poor. There are two corn mills in the parish. Sprowston Hall, the seat of John Nigel Gurney esq. is a fine mansion of red brick, rebuilt in 1881, pleasantly situated on the Wroxham road. John Nigel Gurney esq. who is lord of the manor, the trustees of the late William Hardy Cozens-Hardy esq. of Letheringsett Hall, Sir Edward Paulet Stracey bart. of Rackheath Park, and Gilbert Hardinge Stracey esq. are the chief landowners. The soil of this parish is extremely light; subsoil, generally gravel, with patches of clay at varying depths, from which excellent bricks are made. The chief crops are wheat, oats, barley and turnips and market garden produce; the area is 2,576 acres; rateable value, £6,136; the population in 1891 was 2,165.

National School (mixed), erected in 1860 by Mrs. Arkwright & enlarged in 1873 by the late John Gurney esq. & again in 1885 & 1891; it will now hold 360 children; average attendance, 280.
