Historical Description

Wissy or Stoke river, to Stoke Ferry; this village is distant from London 88 miles. It is in the hundred of Clack-close, and situated on the Stoke river, which is navigable to this place from the Ouse. Stoke Ferry contains 72 houses. It has an established post-house; inn, the Crown. About three miles on the right of Stoke Ferry is Oxborough, the seat of Sir R. Bedingfield, Bart.

STOKE FERRY is a parish and small market town on the river Wissey, at the junction of roads from Thetford and Brandon to Downham, and is the terminus of the Downham and Stoke Ferry branch from the Ely and Lynn section of the Great Eastern railway, 7 miles east-south-east from Downham Market, 14 south-east from Lynn and 87 from London, in the South Western division of the county, Clackclose hundred and petty sessional division, Downham union and county court district, rural deanery of Fincham, archdeaconry of Lynn and diocese of Norwich. The church of All Saints, restored in 1848, is a building of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel and nave and a western turret containing a clock and one bell: there are 300 sittings. The register dates from the year 1703. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £150, including 11 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1858 by the Rev. John McGill, of St. Bees, who is a surrogate. The small tithes are commuted to the Crown at £192 18s. yearly and the great tithes to the Norwich Union Fire Insurance Company at £247. Here are Wesleyan and Free Methodist chapels. A market for cattle and corn is held every Monday. A fair for horses and cattle is held on December 6th, and one for hiring servants on the Thursday before old Michaelmas; considerable business is also done at the wharf in corn, coal, lime and malt. Messrs. Paine and Brettell, solicitors, of Chertsey, Surrey, are lords of the manor. Augustus Edward Roger Micklefield esq. Charles Bader esq. Miss Johnson, Bradfield Etheridge esq. Richard Harwin esq. and the vicar are the principal landowners. The area is 2,059 acres; rateable value, £3,770; the population in 1891 was 724. By an order which came into operation March 25th, 1884, detached parts of Wereham and Wretton were amalgamated with this parish.

A School Board of 5 members was formed 24 April 1875, but does not act; Frederic Spinks, Downham, clerk to the board & attendance officer.

Free School, erected & endowed in 1819 by the late James Bradfield esq. for the education of 25 poor boys, from the parishes of Stoke Ferry & Wretton, for 100 boys & girls & 60 infants; average attendance, 120 boys, girls & infants.
