Historical Description
Stradsett is a village in the hundred of Clack-close. On the right is a turnpike road to Swaffham, on the left to Downham.
STRADSETT is a parish and village on the road from Downham to Swaffham, 4 miles north-east from Downham station on the Ely and Lynn section of the Great Eastern railway, in the South Western division of the county. Clackclose hundred and petty sessional division, Downham union and county court district, rural deanery of Fincham, archdeaconry of Lynn and Norwich diocese. The church of St. Mary is a stuccoed building in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and an embattled western tower with pinnacles containing 3 bells: the stained east window, presented by the late Thomas Philip Bagge esq. (d. 1827) was made at Amsterdam in 1543: in the church are a number of monuments to the Bagge family, dating from 1827 to 1891: in 1867 the interior was considerably improved by the removal of the western gallery and the opening of the Early English arch of the tower: in 1891 the church was thoroughly restored and redecorated by Sir Alfred Thomas Bagge bart. Captain R.N., D.L., J.P. Lady Bagge and members of the family, and four stained windows have been added in memory of the late Rev. Phillip Salisbury Bagge M.A. rector of St. Mary’s, Walpole (1853—90), and affords 250 sittings. The register dates from the year 1559. The living is a vicarage, united to that of Crimplesham in 1878, average tithe rent-charge £218, joint gross yearly value £270, net £250, including 25 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Bishop of Norwich, and held since 1891 by the Rev. Andrew Pryde, of St. Bees, who resides at Crimplesham. Under the Inclosure Act, a sum of not less than £5, or more than £10, is to be laid out in coals yearly for the benefit of the poor. Stradsett Hall, a large and ancient mansion, standing in an extensive park, which contains a lake of 21 ½ acres, abounding with fish, is the property of Sir Alfred Thomas Bagge bart. Capt. R.N., D.L., J.P. of Crimplesham Hall, who is lord of the manor, lay impropriator and principal landowner. The soil is of a mixed and excellent quality; subsoil, drift, clay and green sand. The chief crops are wheat, barley &c. The area is 1,318 acres; rateable value, £1,371; the population in 1891 was 122.
