Historical Description
THURNE (or Thirne) is a parish and small village on the navigable rivers Bure and Thurne, 4 miles west from Martham station on the Midland and Great Northern joint railway, 5 north from Acle station on the Acle and Yarmouth branch of the Great Eastern railway, 16 miles north-east from Norwich and 11 north-west from Yarmouth, in the Eastern division of the county, incorporated hundreds, petty sessional division and incorporation of East and West Flegg, Great Yarmouth county court district, rural deanery of Flegg and archdeaconry and diocese of Norwich. The church of St. Edmund the King and Martyr is an ancient structure of rubble and flint, with stone quoins, in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, north porch and an embattled western tower containing one bell, said to date from the 14th cent.: there are 120 sittings. The register dates from the year 1559. The living is a rectory, consolidated with those of Ashby and Oby, average yearly value from tithe rent-charge £483; net income £540, of which £50 goes to the living at Tunstall, with 22 acres of glebe and residence at Oby, in the gift of the Bishop of Norwich, and held since 1890 by the Rev. William Francis Dixon B. A. of St. John’s College, Cambridge, who resides at Oby. Dr. Christopher Wordsworth, sometime master of Trinity College, Cambridge (1820—41), was rector here from 1804 to 1806. The Primitive Methodist chapel, erected in 1852, was enlarged in 1887 at a cost of £80. The Reading Room here was originally built in 1886 by the late Mr. Sherwood Page, of Boundary House, Oby, for the use of the young men of the parish, but is now (1896) carried on by the parish council in different premises. The poor’s land of 16 acres, awarded at the enclosure, now lets for about £12, and there are also 20 acres on which the poor may graze cattle by paying a yearly sum; the money thus raised is distributed in coals, Thomas Alfred Rising esq. of Ormesby St. Margaret, who is lord of the manor, Samuel Nightingale esq. of Seratby, Great Ormesby, Mrs. Riches, of Southwood, and Mr, Charles Greenacre, are the principal landowners. The soil is mixed; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley, hay, turnips and roots. The area is 660 acres; rateable value, £1,190; the in 1891 was 488.
National School (mixed), built by the then rector, the Rev. H. Bolton, in 1845, & enlarged in 1873 by public subscription; it now holds 60 children; average attendance, 46.
