Historical Description

WALSOKEN is a parish and village adjoining Wisbech, from which it is separated by a canal; the part adjacent to Wisbech is called New Walsoken, and has extended very much during the last few years; it is about a quarter of a mile from Wisbech stations on the Midland and Great Eastern railways and 3 miles from Emneth station on the latter system, in the North Western division of the county, hundred and petty sessional division of Freebridge Marshland, union and county court district of Wisbech, rural deanery of Lynn Marshland, archdeaconry of Lynn and diocese of Norwich, and was governed by a Local Board of Health, but under the provisions of the “Local Government Act, 1894” (56 & 57 Vict. c. 73), an Urban District Council has been established. The church of All Saints, standing a little off the high road, is a large and ancient building in the Norman style, consisting of chancel with aisles, nave, aisles and an embattled western tower with spire containing 6 bells: the tower and west doorway are Decorated with Geometrical work; crossing the aisles are fine screens of the 15th century retaining traces of colour and gilding, which is also found on the nave roof: in the chancel is a memorial window to Richard Young esq. M.P. for North Cambridgeshire in 1865: one acre of glebe land was added to the churchyard in 1883, and the whole placed under the control of a Burial Board of 6 members. The register dates from the year 1558. The living is a rectory, average yearly value from tithe rent-charge £950, net yearly value £950, with 30 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of trustees, and held since 1871 by the Rev. John Young, who is also a surrogate for the diocese. Here is a Primitive Methodist chapel. A cemetery was formed in 1882; it is now under control of the Urban District Council acting as a Burial Board. The charities amount to £57, which is distributed yearly by the trustees. Walsoken House is the residence of Arthur William English esq. J.P., D.L. the trustees of the late Frederic Moorhouse Metcalfe esq. (d. 1893) are lords of the manor of Walsoken Metcalfe; William Goddard Jackson esq. of Duddington, Northants, is lord of the manor of Walsoken Popenhoe; and Francis Jackson esq. of South Brink, Wisbech, and Edward Hugh Jackson esq. of 7 North Brink, Wisbech, lords of the manor of Walsoken Coleraine. The other principal landowners are John Cockett esq. The Chestnuts, New Walsoken, Eli Vassar esq. New Walsoken, Dr. Bellamy, of St. John’s College, Cambridge, and Lieut.-Col. Edward Southwell Trafford, of Wroxham. The soil is loam; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, peas, potatoes and market garden produce. Walsoken is the centre of a great fruitgrowing district, the principal fruits grown being gooseberries, apples, pears, plums, strawberries and raspberries. The area is 4,646 acres; rateable value, £12,580; the population in 1891 was 2,771.
