Historical Description
WATERDEN is a parish 4 miles west-by-south from Walsingham station on the Dereham and Wells section of the Great Eastern railway, 5 south-east from Burnham Market and 5 north-west from Fakenham, in the North Western division of the county, Brothercross hundred, Smithdon and Brothercross petty sessional division, Docking union, Wolsingham county court district, rural deanery of Burnham, archdeaconry of Norfolk and diocese of Norwich. The church of All Saints, almost entirely concealed by trees, is now a small edifice of flint, in the Early English style, consisting of chance), nave and north porch: it is, however, only a portion of an earlier and larger structure, and the arcades of a south aisle and some remains of a tower can still be traced: the church was greatly injured in the great gale of March 24, 1895, The register dates from the year 1730. The living is a rectory, with that of Egmere annexed, average tithe rent-charge £168, joint gross yearly value £186, including 18 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Earl of Leicester K.G. and held since 1888 by the Rev. William Fitzgerald Gambier Sand-with B.A. of Christ Church, Oxford, who is also vicar of Holkham. The land is wholly comprised in one farm, now occupied by Mr. Edward Blomfield Hamond, and there are a few cottages. The Earl of Leicester K.G., L.L. is the sole landowner and lord of the manor. The soil is a rich loam, producing excellent crops of wheat, barley and green crops generally; subsoil, chiefly gravel, very little marl. The area is 763 acres; rateable value, £760; the population in 1891 was 32.
