Historical Description
Weeting is a village, distant from London 78 miles, and it is divided into Weeting All Saints, and Weeting St. Mary. It is in the hundred of Grimshoe; it contains 64 houses, and 368 inhabitants. In the parish of Weeting All Saints, was Blomehill Priory, founded by Sir Hugh de Plaize, in the reign of King John.
There is only one church at Weeting: the patronage of the living is vested in Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge. Near the east end of the churchyard are the ruins of a square castle; part of the moat, and the hill on which was erected the keep, are still visible.
On the west side of this village is a bank and ditch, extending some miles, called Fen Dyke, or the Foss; and in the fields is a grassy way, called Walsinsham Way, by which pilgrims used to pass to the Madonna, at Walsingham.
Two miles to the cast of Weeting, on a rising ground, is a large encampment, of a semicircular form, comprising about twelve acres. Within the inclosure (says Mr. Britton) are numerous deep pitsdug in a quincunx form, having the largest in the centre. These pits are not only capable of containing a large body of men, but of concealing them from the view of persons passing the road. At the end of this entrenchment is a long tumulus, or harrow, which is called Grimes' Graves, and is supposed to be so denominated from a person named Grimes, and grave, a Saxon word for a hole, that is "Grimes’ holes." Colonel Dickson has an elegant mansion here; the doors and sash frames are solid mahogany, and the apartments furnished in the choicest style from the first floor to the attic story. This seat is one of the largest and best built houses in Norfolk. The manor abounds with game.
WEETING is a parish, on the navigable river Little Ouse and the borders of Suffolk, in the South Western division of the county, union and county court district of Thetford, hundred and petty sessional division of Grimshoe, rural deanery of Cranwich, south division, archdeaconry of Lynn and diocese of Norwich. Brandon station on the Great Eastern railway is within the parish of Weeting. There were anciently two churches here, but that of All Saints was demolished in the 18th century by the falling in of the tower, and its ruins still remain in the park. The existing church of St. Mary is a small building of flint in the Decorated style, consisting of chancel, nave, north aisle, south porch and a round embattled tower containing 2 bells: there are 250 sittings. The register dates from the year 1558. The livings form a consolidated rectory, average tithe rent-charge £376, joint net yearly value £350, including 127 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Caius College, Cambridge, and held since 1889 by the Rev, John Stuart Jackson M.A. and late fellow of that College. The Devil’s Dyke borders the parish for about 3 miles on the north-west and there is an ancient mound or vallum of earth extending from the Little Ouse to Didlington, In the parish, in a wild and desolate locality, are“Grimes graves,” of which a scientific examination was made in 1870 by the Rev, Canon Green well F.S.A, of Durham; the “graves,” of which there are more than a hundred, are circular in form, and contained large quantities of animal bones, including horns of the red and the roe deer, the teeth of a small ox, goats, swine and dog, and various implements of a primitive character, found at depths varying from ten to thirty-five feet below the surface: the learned explorer decided that these graves are not, as had been supposed, the remains of a British village, but ancient flint quarries, the pits having evidently been worked, and no doubt in prehistoric times, for some such purpose. In the flint quarries at Broomhill numerous flint implements of the earliest type, similar to the well-known St. Acheul specimens, have been found, with the bones of extinct species of animals. Here are the remains of a castle built in the 11th century, by William de Warrenne, Earl of Warrenne and Surrey, and son-in-law of the Conqueror: the Warrennes were succeeded here by the family of de la Plaiz. The priory of Bromehill, or Bromwell, was founded here by Sir II. de la Plaiz, in the time of King John, for canons of the order of St. Augustine, and dedicated to SS. Mary and Thomas the Martyr: it was eventually granted to Cardinal Wolsey and was intended by him as part of the endowment for his college at Ipswich, but was afterwards given to Christ’s College, Cambridge, and was for a time the residence of John Shadwell, father of Thomas Shadwell, Poet Laureate under the Commonwealth, who was apparently brought here when about 14 years of age. The estate now belongs to William Angerstein esq. the lord of the manor and sole landowner; Weeting Hall, his property, a handsome mansion of white brick, in the Italian style, standing in an extensive park and surrounded by plantations, is now (1896) unoccupied. The soil is light and sandy; subsoil, chalk and sand. The chief crops are wheat, barley and turnips, and a large portion of the parish is rabbit warren. The area is 6,187 acres; rateable value, £4,298; the population in 1891 was 278.
School (mixed), supported by William Angerstein esq.: it will hold 80 children; average attendance, 54.
