Historical Description
WELNEY is a parish, formerly partly in the Isle of Ely and county of Cambridge, and partly in Norfolk, on the banks of the Old Bedford river, 6 miles west from Manea station on the March and Ely section of the Great Eastern railway, 13 south-east from Wisbech and 10 south-east from March, in the South Western division of the county, hundred and petty sessional division of Clackclose, union and county court district of Downham, rural deanery of Fincham West, archdeaconry of Lynn and diocese of Norwich: a suspension bridge, erected in 1826 at the sole cost of the Rev. William Gale Townley, formerly rector here, crosses the Hundredfoot river, and connects the village with Littleport and Ely. By an order of the county council, confirmed by Local Government Board order, which came into operation in September, 1895, the whole of Welney has been assigned to the county of Norfolk, and is divided into two parishes, the former Cambridgeshire part being called West Welney, and the Norfolk portion known as Welney. The church of St. Mary the Virgin, erected in 1848, on the removal of the old church, with funds derived from Marshall’s charity, is a building of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, north vestry and an eastern turret containing one bell: the east window is stained, and there is a stone reredos, erected in 1887 by friends of the present rector, at a cost of about £120. The registers date from the year 1642. The living, formerly a chapelry of Upwell, is now a rectory average tithe rent-charge £950, net yearly value £680, with 13 acres of glebe and residence, built in 1864, in the gift of the Rev. Charles Francis Townley M.A. and held since 1872 by the Rev. Edward Russell Wilford M.A. of Christ’s College, Cambridge, rural dean of Fincham West, diocesan inspector of schools in the deanery of Fincham, and surrogate, and J.P. Norfolk and Isle of Ely. There are Baptist and Primitive Methodist chapels here. Marshall’s Charity consists of lands left in 1661 by W. Marshall esq. of Lincoln’s Inn fields, London, now yielding a net income of about £500 a year: the property is vested in the hands of trustees and of the proceeds one-third is given to the widows in the parish and two-thirds are appropriated to the church, the schools and the roads. The Rev. Charles Francis Townley M.A. rector of Christ Church, Upwell, is lord of the manor. The principal landowners are W. R. Beart esq. Morley Beart esq. the trustees of the late William Little esq. James Failes esq. and Charles Thomas Robinson esq. of Hunstanton. The soil is clay and fen; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are coleseed, oats, wheat, beans and roots. The area of Welney is 3,453 acres of land, 32 of water, 28 of tidal water and 14 of foreshore; rateable value, £4,423; the population in 1891 was 514. The area of West Welney is 1,806 acres of land, 11 of water and 8 of tidal water; rateable value, £2,920; the population in 1891 was 565. By an order which came into operation March 25, 1884, a detached part of Upwell was amalgamated with Welney parish.
Tip’s End is 2 ½ miles north-west, in West Welney, and the Wash to the south.
