Civil & Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction
Historical Description
Near Wighton are the remains of a large Danish camp, treble trenched, the ramparts 30 feet high. The windmill, south of it, stands on the corner of a like entrenchment, much defaced, and opposite to it, where stood Crab’s Castle, is a farmhouse, which was another part of the entrenchment.
Wighton is in the hundred of North Greenhoe, and is 115 miles from London; it contains 76 houses and 446 persons. It is a vicarage in the patronage of the dean and chapter of Norwich.
WIGHTON is a parish and village on the road from Wells to Fakenham, 2 ½ miles north from Walsingham station on the Dereham and Wells section of the Great Eastern railway and 3 south-by-east from Wells, in the Northern division of the county, North Greenhoe hundred and petty sessional division, Walsingham union and county court district, rural deanery of Walsingham, archdeaconry of Lynn and diocese of Norwich. The church of All Saints is a large edifice in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave with clerestory, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower containing one bell: the fourteen windows of the nave have stained centres, representing the twelve Apostles and St. Paul and Barnabas respectively: on the south side of the chancel arch is an almost perfect rood staircase: the chancel retains a piscina and at the north door is a holy water stoup: the ancient font is in a fine state of preservation and has been recently fitted for use: the chancel was restored in 1886 at a cost of £500; the church affords 200 sittings. The register dates from the year 1660. The living is a vicarage, average tithe rent-charge £177, net yearly value £208, including 18 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Norwich and held since 1883 by the Rev. John Henry Rushworth Pilling M.A. of Merton College, Oxford. Traces of an ancient chapel exist on land now in the occupation of Mr. Charles Powell. The Primitive Methodist chapel was erected in 1874. The Salvation Army have a meeting house here. Thera are charities to the amount of £81 yearly. At Crabbe’s Castle, about miles west of the village, are some remains of ancient entrenchments: several Roman coins and other relics have been found there. The Earl of Leicester K.G., L.L. is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The soil is light; subsoil, gravel. The crops are on the four-course system. The parish contains 2,932 acres; rateable value, £2,570; in 1891 the population was 491.
National School (mixed), with house for the master, erected in 1872, for 96 children & enlarged in 1888 to hold 130; average attendance, 90.
