Historical Description

WORSTEAD (anciently called Worstede) is a parish and town, pleasantly situated on gradually rising ground near a stream, with a station on the North Walsham branch of the Great Eastern railway, 8 miles north-east from Aylsham and 3 south-by-east from North Walsham, in the Eastern division of the county, Tunstead and Happing petty sessional division, Tunstead hundred, Smallburgh union, North Walsham county court district, rural deanery of Waxham, Tunstead division, and archdeaconry and diocese of Norwich. The Church of St. Mary is a building of freestone and flint in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower with four pinnacles, containing a clock and 6 bells: the font is hexagonal, each face being finely sculptured: the organ was erected in 1879 at a cost of £250: there were originally nine chapels, two of which were dedicated respectively to the Virgin and St. John the Baptist; and of these the former was restored by the late vicar in 1878, in memory of his father: two remarkable double screens divide the chapels from the aisles: the chancel was thoroughly restored in 1891, and the church affords 500 sittings. The register dates from the year 1558. The living is a vicarage, average tithe rent-charge £202, net yearly value £268, with four acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Norwich, and held since 1895 by the Rev. Thomas Leonard Jenkins M.A. of Hertford College, Oxford. The Baptist chapel, on Meeting House hill, was erected in 1829 in place of an older building; in 1886 it was reseated at a cost of about £300, and will now seat 500 persons: connected with this chapel is a burial ground, parsonage and schoolhouse, as well as almshouses for twelve poor members of the congregation, built and endowed by Mr. Samuel Chapman, of Norwich. There is also a Primitive Methodist chapel. A small charity is distributed weekly to 25 poor parishioners, each receiving one loaf of bread. The late Rev. Henry Wharton left the rent of 22 acres of land in Shoteshain for the repair of the church. This parish, in remote times, was a manufacturing and important market town and the original seat of the manufacture of worsted stuffs, to which it gives its name, but this industry is now confined to Norwich and neighbourhood. A fair is annually held on the 12th and 13th of May, for cattle. In the reign of Edward the Confessor the lordship belonged, as the gift of King Cnut, to the Abbey of St. Bene’t-of-Holme, near Horning: the manor was then held of the abbot by Robert, an officer, whose son, Odo, assumed the name of De Worstede or Worsted. On the dissolution of the abbey, 27 Hen. VIII. (1535—6), the manor belonging to it, with the rectory and the patronage of the vicarage, were granted to the Dean and Chapter of Norwich, by whom it is at present held. Worstead House, the seat of Lieut.-Col. William John Rous, is a fine mansion of red brick, standing in a noble park of about 300 acres, which contains a lake covering 8 ¼ acres. The Dean and Chapter of Norwich are lords of the chief manor, but the parish includes not less than 20 manors, principally belonging to the Dean and Chapter of Norwich and Lieut.-Col. Rous. Mrs. Lubbock, of Catfield Hall, Great Yarmouth, Lieut.-Col, Rous, Mrs. Petre, of Westwick House, Norwich, and Henry Morse Taylor esq. J.P. of the Rookery, Dilliam, are the principal landowners. The soil is mixed; subsoil, sand and gravel. The chief crops are wheat, oats and barley. The area is 2,603 acres; rateable value, £4,356: the population in 1891 was 819, three-quarters of a mile north, Brockley, one mils west, Withergate, half a mile north-west, and Briggate, 1 ¼ miles north-east, are hamlets.

National School (mixed), built in 1844, for about 150 children; average attendance, 117.
