Historical Description
WRETTON is a parish and village on the river Wissey, one mile west from Stoke Ferry terminal station of a branch of the Great Eastern railway from Denver (near Downham) on the Ely and Lynn section and 6 ½ south-east from Downham, in the South Western division of the county, Clackclose hundred and petty sessional division, Downham union and county court district, rural deanery of Fincham, archdeaconry of Lynn and diocese of Norwich. The church of All Saints is a building of flint in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, south aisle, south porch and an embattled western tower with quoins of free stone, and containing 2 bells: it was restored and re-roofed in 1863, and affords 200 sittings. The register dates from the year 1693. The living is a vicarage, annexed to that of Wereham, joint net yearly value £136, including 51 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Bishop of Norwich, and held since 1885 by the Rev, Richard Massey M.A. of St. Alban Hall, Oxford. Colonel Leach is the impropriator of the tithes, which are commuted at £256. Here is a Primitive Methodist chapel. Six acres of land were left to the poor by Miss Jane Forby, and at the enclosure about 20 acres of fen land were allotted to the poor, producing together an average yearly rental of £8, which sum is distributed in money annually on St. Thomas’ Day. Henry Edwards Paine esq. solicitor, of Chertsey, Surrey, is lord of the manors of Cavenham and Iron Hall. Augustus Edward Roger Micklefield esq. of Stoke Ferry, and Charles Bader esq. of Fen house, Stoke Ferry, are the principal landowners. The soil is mostly black sand; subsoil, red sand and peat. The chief crops are wheat, barley, turnips &c. The area is 1,154 acres; rateable value, £1,485; the population in 1891 was 322.
