Historical Description

BUGBROOKE, in Domesday Book “Buchebroc,” is a parish and village, 6 miles north from Towcester, 6 west-south-west from Northampton, in the Mid division of the county, hundred of Nobottle Grove, petty sessional division, union and county court district of Northampton, rural deanery of Weedon, archdeaconry of Northampton and diocese of Peterborough. The Grand Junction canal and the London and North Western railway pass through the parish, the nearest stations being at Blisworth, 4 miles south-east, for London, and Weedon, 4 north-west, for the North. The church of St. Michael is an edifice of stone, in the Early English, Decorated and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, clerestoried nave, aisles, north and south porches and a low embattled western tower with spire containing a clock and five bells, together with a small sanctus bell: the whole church was originally Early English, and to this date the nave, arcades and other portions belong: the tower and spire are Decorated and the clerestory Perpendicular: in the north aisle is a piscina and at its eastern end a vestry: the rood screen, a Perpendicular work of rich design, remains almost entire: the octagonal font is of the same period: in 1890 the church was partially restored and entirely reseated, the chancel was at the same time rebuilt with a south aisle, which is used as a choir vestry, in the course of the work a beautiful window was discovered between the end of the north aisle and the vestry room, and has now been opened and glazed: the communion table, made of olive wood from Jerusalem, was presented in 1896 by Ernest Wivelsfield Harrison esq. and the rector. The church affords 300 sittings. The churchyard was considerably enlarged by the patron about 1849, and was consecrated in 1866. The register dates from the year 1556. The living is a rectory, average rent-charge £38, net yearly value £475, including 410 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Ernest Wivelsfield Harrison, and held since 1895 by the Rev. Arthur Oswel James M.A. of Lincoln College, Oxford, rural dean of Weedon and surrogate. There is a charity estate producing about £13 yearly, for distribution in bread; Johnson’s charity, founded by will in 1826 and invested in the funds, comprises the interest of £900 for four poor widows, and of £270 for apprenticing poor boys of this parish; Bracegirdle's charity of £1 5s. is for distribution in money. Here is a Baptist chapel, built in 1808. Ernest Wivelsfield Harrison esq. who is lord of the manor, and Mrs. Woolcpmbe Adams, of Anstey Hall, Warwickshire, are the principal landowners, and there are also several smaller landowners. The soil is various; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley, cereals and pasture; the arable and pasture land are about equal. The area is 2,226 acres of land and 16 of water; rateable value, £7,011; the population in 1801 was 857.

A School Board of 5 members was formed Aug. 24, 1871; Henry Lovell, clerk to the board; George Cotton, attendance & inquiry officer, Bugbrooke.

Board Schools, built with master’s house, in 1872, at a cost of £2,000, for 180 children; average attendance, 125; the National school, erected in 1844, at a cost of about £1,000 is now used as a Sunday school & for other purposes.
